  • Re: 2007 Read The Book Challenge

I did some reading today as well.

First, I totally agree with you Jimmie about the sesame seeds in the induction menu sample. That's just wrong!

On page 118, one of the things that popped out at me was the phrase "firm commitment" as opposed to a "shallow notion" of eating this way. This WOE is not a quick fix, and it truly is a chosen lifestyle.

Also, twice in my reading today he mentions not reading the portions of the book leading up to Part 2 ! In all seriousness, this is why many people fail.

Page 121 he says "First of all let me welcome those of you who are starting the book at this point. While I admire your sense of effeciency, I think you are cheating yourself of the information that will provide long term success"

    Very true.

I think the Part One of the book is in fact one of the most important. Unless you read it I don't think people truly get it.

i agree on all points, ladies!

i've been thinking about the induction menu and the sesame seeds being thrown on top of that salad. this is what i think: dr. a did the writing and had a nutritionist add the menus. it was their addition and the proof reader missed it entirely.

It was really good to read... and made me remember not to focus so much on the number on the scale and to be happy that I'm leading a healthier lifestyle now. Well, that's what I got out of it....
sorry to now be participating so far... will try to catch up somehow?????

I always get that mildly guilty feeling at the start of Part Two.
Dr A stresses the importance of getting a medical check up before starting Atkins. I never did this, and regret it. I'd have really loved to have had a "before" medical picture to compare the "after" one with.

Did anyone else begin without doing a medical at the start?

I didn't have a "medical check" per se...but had a follow up appt with my doctor regarding something else. Asked for a bunch of blood work I wanted done & she gave me a lab slip. So luckily I have all those numbers as a baseline.

Sunny I am holding you and your brother in my prayers ........... I hope everything went well yesterday!

I also had bloodwork done prior to starting Atkins and then again at my 3 months stage. I don't remember my exact numbers but they were amazing how much my bad cholesterol dropped and my triglycerides as well and my good number was right up nice and high.
I really enjoyed the first part of the book but this part has always not interested me as much .......... so I am trudging through and trying to make myself find time to read. I didnt pick it up once all wekeend but plan a good hour of reading time today when Olivia naps.

I'll report back aftermy read today

i suppose one reason was simply the cost. we have rarely had medical insurance and putting a check up into the budget just wasn't going to happen.
i did have my cholesterol and blood pressure checked prior to losing weight. b/p has been checked since but sadly, not my cholesterol.

I had blood work done in 2000 before I lost my original 82 lbs on Atkins. My cholestrol was just a tad high. From then on even with the slip ups it has always been excellent. Thanks dr A!

Jimmie~ I hate doing it even with ins because of the deductable. I had thyroid tests run last week and I cringe to see my part. Dang tests were the same anyways as before! Slightly low but not ready to treat. I could just shoot them now for killing part of in off in 1987.

                          Hey, chicks.

I have to say that I have renewed respect for Dr. A. He was a pioneer for controlled carb lifestyle when it wasn't cool. He had to of been clobered by the critics. I admire him for sticking to his personal beliefs and motivation to change a slow to change this diet nation.

The other thing that is stated over & over again in the beginning of part 2 is that if you are on diabetic treatment, your meds will change because the fuel burning of your body will change and thus insulin will be affected. To be so confident about his beliefs is admirable. Even with proof sources, it would be hard to go against the norm.

                          interesting.

It's expensive here too jimmie, even with our so called health service. The contributions we pay for every little medical test/investigation or any prescribed medicines are really high. It's enough to put anyone off.
