Finished my reading and homework tonight. I never have really read about pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance before--skipped over it and figured I'd read it when I got closer. Very interesting and some things make more sense now.

Thanks Sunny for posting the title of the Dr A biography. Now I want to get hold of a copy... should make interesting reading.
Unfortunately when there are ghostwriters involved there are often little things that escape the proofreaders and the supposed "authers". Happens a lot.

It's understandable that there were ghostwriters... Dr Atkins must've had a huge amount on his plate, so little time for writing. Also, ghostwriters are professional writers, which Dr A probably wasn't, so it makes sense. He inputs the content and the ghostwriters make it presentable. He was still responsible for the 2002 edition though and no doubt held lots of stuff in check that the $$$$ grubbers would've put in.

Wow I've missed a very interesting discussion!!! I have 72,92 and (2002)the version the board uses. My favorite is 72 though due to the extreme simplicity.
I really earned alot from catching up on your posts this morning. Sorry to not have contributed more the last fewdays but computer time wasn't in the busy schedule.

michelle, the 72 version is the one i did but i don't remember much about it. maybe because of the simplicity of it? lol

Last night I wrote a long post about my thoughts on Section 2. Just before I hit send I lost the wireless connection. DUH...thats why I don't like using the laptop.

What I keep coming back to is that this is not a diet this is a WOL that works for me. Yes the weigh loss is wonderful but I want to obtain health & well being. I want to break the chains of food addiction. I want to break the habits of using food for my emotional needs. I do not want to self destruct anymore.

The other big point is not using the scale to judge my progress. I see this as a huge problem for many many people. I judge my progress by how I'm feeling, my energy level, how well I'm sleeping at night, how many inches I'm losing thus my clothes fitting better or simply getting to large, my progress in exercising & of course compliments from DH!!

I've learned the importance of setting mini goals recently. I set a goal of losing 10# for the Turkey Day Challenge & I met it. It is beyond awesome to see GOALIE by my name. In reading Chapter 14 Dr. A talks about making your goals specific. He uses the metaphor of getting in the car to go on a family vacation with no plans of where you are going. That just really made sense to me & helped me realize how important those mini goals are!!

I never read Pre~Maintenance & Maintenance before as I felt it didn't yet pertain to me. I learned alot there & feel prepared for the day that I enter this phase.

So much knowledge in one book!! I wish that everyone would read the book in its entirety. If they did it may save them alot of frustrations. Knowledge is a powerful thing!!! Dr A in regards to reading the book said...

"Are you going t read the rest of this book? There is only one answer: You must, because your health and well-being depend on it. But let me remind you: Two weeks won't get the job done-only a lifetime of health-oriented behavior will" page 235

Enough for now. Have a great day everyone!

                  nicely said, glenda!

sometimes it's very hard for me to sit and watch goals trying to be met. some girls and boys are already at goal in mind and spirit, their bodies just haven't caught up yet. this was a conversation that i had with a couple peeps just the other day.
goal is so much more than just a scale number but, sadly, it's what we guage everything by.

i'd like to see weight ranges or clothing size as goals. or like grant just making goal... he said he wanted to lose 120 pounds. that was his goal. he's not quitting there but he made his goal no matter what the scale said. anything he loses now is the proverbial icing on the cake.

i like seeing goals set that say "somewhre between 130 and 140" or whatever would apply. had i done that and stated my goal would be 120 to 130, i think i would have saved myself some grief along the way. this is all just personal, of course.

HOMEWORK FOR PART THREE IS UP AND READY!

                      pretty much exactly it, pr!

i will say this, if we eat from the rungs as we should at our 5 gram limit and still get in our protein, fat and carbs allowed on induction.... well, shoot, wrap that all up in a nice day of eating and i know for a fact, it's alot of food! i've not been able to eat the entire allowed 5 grams per rung per day because sometimes it's just been too much food.

I've got the 1999 version and there are no rungs in that, so I am assuming there are not rungs in any of the books older than that.

There's also no deducting fiber carbs, is that in the 2002 book?

I have been following the 1999 version. I don't pay attention to rungs and I base my carb intake on total carbs, not net carbs.

yeah, the net carbs are mentioned. dr a mentions the "carbs that count when you do atkins" many times.
