i hope you plan on getting the 2002 edition so you'll be more "in the know" as you progress, elf. seems like you're missing some vital information. since Dr A stressed the triad - woe, exercise and supplements- it's strange to see that not much of two of those was stressed in the 1999 book.

Yeah, I'm wondering what happened between 1999 and 2002 that made him add or rewrite so much.

dunno... maybe he found a better way to make it all work like we do so often.

I'm probably over in cheese and nuts, but I'm not sweating it. The "bread" that I made my stuffing with was mostly almond flour and several cheeses (cream cheese, parmesan and Italian blend) and a lot of eggs. My stuffing was really yummy. I also made the "just like stuffed baked potato" that has a lot of sharp cheddar, but I didn't eat much of it. I got full fast. The pumpkin bars are made with almond flour and have cream cheese frosting.

I read the Atkins book while I was riding my recumbent stepper to walk off the extra calories! I am probably doing too much exercise too fast, but I am enjoying it so much after not being able to do anything for almost nine months. My surgeon said I could start back next week, but I got the urge on Monday and it feels so good and I have improved my mood and energy so much, it's hard to hold back.

            Sunny!

              Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I really enjoy the conversation about the older versions of the book and our 2002 version. Sunny, I didn't realize that Dr. A was so, let's say, "direct." It sounds like his patients appreciated his honesty.

I stopped tapered off of Zoloft about 3 months ago. I took it for about 2 years. I feel much better now that I only take vitamins and natural nutrients. I don't like the idea of relying on meds.

I also have had not legal foods and when I have them, I too notice that they just don't taste so "good." It does help me realize it is so worth it to stay on track. For me, it is all about figuring out what works for me.

how great is it that you got off zoloft!!!! it's wonderful to see how just adjusting our diets, getting active and taking supplements work for us .
i know that not every member will get off every medication but it's great when it can happen.

                    You'll never be old, Jimmie!

Has anyone ever read Dr A's Vitanutrient book? I prefer to use natural means whenever possible to cure my aches and pains and wondered if his book was worth the money.

It frustrates me when doctors just want to give me a pill to "cure" me without bothering to try to find out "why" I have the problem in the first place. I'd rather prevent health problems than have to take pills that cause side effects that you have to take more pills for. Saw my dad go through that and I don't want to go down that road.

Been busy, but I'll finish homework tomorrow.

I finished part iii and homework yesterday. One thing that jumped out at me in the Exercise chapter is at the beginning, where Dr. A refers to the "Atkins Nutritional Approach". It made me realize that this is the differentiator between Atkins and other low carb diets. You will probably lose weight on any one of them, but what then? If you go back to your previous lifestyle, the chances of keeping the weight off are practically nil. I think if we start thinking about and referring to the "Atkins Nutritional Approach" instead of the "Atkins Diet", the arguments about the value of exercise, strictly following the food plan and taking supplements become non-issues. I just wish the message had been given in its pure form and not tainted by commercialism.

I was introduced to Atkins through his book, "Dr. Atkins Age Defying Diet". As I approached 60, I was worried about osteoporosis since my mother suffered from it. I find it very helpful in explaining how our bodies change as we age and how vitanutrients can be of benefit. He also explains insulin resistance and the benefits of a low carbohydrate diet. Shortly after that, our newspaper printed Gary Taubs' article, "What If It Has All Been a Big Fat Lie?". I immediately purchased the "New Diet Revolution" and shortly after that stumbled on this board. The rest, as they say, is history. In my opinion, the "Vita-Nutrient Solution" is worth the money as a reference. There are very detailed explanations of many vita-nutrients. The last chapter has a list of various diseases and his recommended supplements and dosages. This might be a good place to "get your bearings", so to speak, if, like me, you are not well versed in the science of supplementation.
