Read some of the book to my mom yesterday. I am determined to help her change her eating habits. She lives for sweets and eats hardly any vegetables!

I've never liked sweets, but I have a niece that weighed about 175 pounds. She ate a large box of sugar sweetened cereal per DAY and added several spoons of sugar to each bowl. This was with whole milk. About 10 years ago, all she did to lose quickly down to 130 pounds and maintain that weight was to give up the cereal and the extra sugar that went with it!

        Sunny!

sunny, your neice was a lucky kind of girl to be able to drop weight simply by dumping the cereal routine. myjack is the same way, in regards to losing. he still eats candy and drinks a couple dews a day and has ice cream every night but he started walking 3 to 4 times a week with me, since he joined the 6 wec with me, and he started losing. it was slow, at about 5 pounds a month but he dropped the weight so easily. ah, if it were that easy for all of us, it would be great, but alas, it is not.

has anybody been so far ahead of the game that they've finished part one already!
and who looked ahead to find all the answers without reading the book? I KNOW YA'LL DIDN'T DO THAT, RIGHT????

silly, is you mom on the heavy side of life? i know that doesen't make any difference as far as needing to eat right, but i just wondering.
what kind of places do you eat at when you go for your mom dates?

I finished part one and did the homework as best I could. In the 1999 edition of the book it seems most of the chapter titles are different.

thanks for reporting one of the differences, elffriend. as we move along, it would be good for you to tell us of the changes you notice. i know you won't be able to catch everything but you'll notice some just by the conversation and the questions.

kudos to you for reading so much and so the homework as best as you could! i'm proud of you!

was there anything that really struck you during your reading?

Not really. This is not my first reading of the book, I read it years ago. I had forgotten some of it, but it all came back as I was reading it.

I have only read the intro & up to page 6 before it was time to get my daughter out of the tub this morning. That's when I usually get my reading done - the 15-20 minutes each morning while my daughter is having her bath. I'd better pick up the pace & carve out some evening reading time!

you'll probably do fine with this first part as it is one of the shorter parts of the book. but come part two, we'll really have to watch that none of us fall behind. it will be too hard to catch up.

jsut a couple things i've made notes on as i've read the next two chapters.

                        1. the questions were suppose to be in the order you would come across them. they weren't but that's been fixed. sorry.

                        2. i find myself wondering, if the lucky people who had Dr. Atkins personally taking care of their needs, are still on plan, still maintaining, since the death of Dr. Atkins. i wish we had follow up so see that these people could continue "on their own".

                        3. i'm wondering is any of you decided which group you were in on page 38. most of my "yes" answers came from group B and specifically from the symptoms of ill health on page 40. of course, this has all changed but, as i thought back to the beginning of my journey, i believe that is the catagory i fit into.

                        4. i liked the comment Dr. Atkins said (and it is one of the fill in the blank questions) this IF you OCCASSIONALLY fall off.............
Dr. Atkins planned for you /us/me to stick this. he was making allowances that you/us/me might have some problems but he expected us to stay the course and not make falling off the wagon a habitually thing. this is reinforced in his statement on page 37 (large type my emphasis)
The truth is that as long as you are COMMITTED, it's going to be surprisingly easy.

                          I am definitely a "B"

I was a gestational diabetic each time I was pregnant. I still have my glucometer from those days and periodically check myself. I was getting abnormally high readings before I started Atkins and now my numbers are way down.

I'm still reading, but not through with section 1 yet. I'm not cheating! Planned on reading more last night, but I was so tired I went to sleep. I'm gonna make it, though! I remember from reading p38 prior that I thought I fit into more than one group. Haven't quite got there, so I'll answer that better when I do.

It would be interesting to find out how his private patients are doing. Wish we could find out.

Internet's been out last night and this morning, so I have stuff to catch up on.

I am most definitely an "A"--anyway, I have been diagnosed with a metabolic disorder at UVA. I had a problem with how they wanted me to deal with it--liquid starvation diet (Cambridge Diet), 500 calories a day or less. I tried it at first, but could not see myself sticking to that for life. That stuff was really nasty. Only on Atkins have I been able to lose for more than a few pounds, though, I haven't lost any significant weight in several months, but have tried harder than ever before. At least I haven't gained except for the occasional up and back down with no explanation. I eat way more than I ever did at nearly 300 pounds.

                              Sunny!

I've been enjoying rereading the book! Hubby & I are taking turns reading out loud to each other, so that's been a lot of fun.

It would be interesting to have a follow-up on the patients Atkins talks about in his book. How lucky they were to have Dr. Atkins as their own physician!!! There were other physicians that worked with Atkins in his clinic...why don't they write a book???

I think I'm more in the B category, too.
