  • My Summertime Challenge

    Hey everyone,

I've been gone for a while, gaining weight. The death of my aunt at Thanksgiving really threw me for a loop, and I lost myself for a few months. Now it's a new year, and I've gained 50 lbs. and feel like it's time to quit running and convincing myself I'm too weak to lose weight.

In August 2003, I started this woe and stayed completely steady and by the numbers and cheat free for almost a year. I dropped almost 100 lbs. and felt like a new woman. So I *know* I can do this. Focus is the key, and getting out of the habit of holing up with food when I feel bad.

And early next year, I am going to get on the trail. I'm going to hike 2,660 miles to raise money for the Komen Foundation (breast cancer). So I really have to get this weight off so that I can start training in earnest this summer. (If you want more information about my hike, my blog is at http://www.hikeforthecure.com.) My pack is going to weigh 40-50 lbs. - so, basically, I want to lose a backpack full of weight. As a learning hiker, I'm become very conscious of ways to cut weight out of my pack so that I can walk farther, and carry more food, and eat better, and thus be healthier.

So, my goal is 50 lbs. by the end of May, just in time for summer. I plan to do most of this time, if not all of it, in induction. I will be drinking at least 100 oz. of water a day, and walking 20+ minutes 3 times a week. I will gradually work up to walking a few miles a week, then several, like I was doing last year; then when I begin training for my hike, I will begin to walk several miles a day (either at local parks, or on a treadmill). I will be eating no sugar, caffeine, or aspartame, or other fake sugars (ie, low-carb candybars). The only "sweet" things I'm keeping are Diet Rite and Arizona diet green tea, to have with lunch at work.

I will be giving myself a refresher on the Do's and Don'ts of induction today, and making a list of foods I can and can't eat, and making up a menu so that I don't get bored with my food quickly, or fall off the wagon easily.

If you have something to lose by the summertime, feel free to jump on board with me. Make your goals, decide what you want to do, then post here if you want to follow along. Looking forward to hearing from you!

      Hi StephieSue,

We both have the same goal, 50 pounds by May. Of course your doing it for a way better cause. I'm going on a cruise in may and want to be healthy and fit. I plan to stay on extended induction also, and after my horrible cheating expirence , i'm geared to go all the way now. Good luck, i'll check in soon!!!

          Re: My Summertime Challenge

I'm so glad to see others have joined me!

I weigh in on Sunday mornings (before I treat myself to a big breakfast of bacon & eggs) so expect to hear from me then.

I was curious if anyone would like to keep tabs on all our weight loss as we go along? If I don't get any volunteers, I'll do it when I weigh in on Sundays.

          Good luck everyone!

Hi Stephie Sue! nice to meet you!

I think we are around the same weight approximately and would have the same amount to lose approximately. I want to lose quite a bit before the summer too, would love to join you on this challenge!

Wow! Another challenge!!! I've got plenty to lose by summer, but not really certain how much of it will go by then. I think I will make my weight loss goal to be 40 pounds by summer. If I do lose 50, I won't be upset!!

                  Re: My Summertime Challenge

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had a good weekend. Did anyone weigh-in over the weekend?

My weigh-in yesterday: Big Fat Zero! I lost nothing. But I'm sure I'll have lost something by the end of this week. It's not unusual for my body to spend the first week preparing to lose weight.

I must say that the temptation is awful. Right now I am spending a lot of time taking care of my family (uncle, grandma, cousins, etc.), due to some things that happened over the holidays, and they don't diet. It's a huge temptation to go over there and just snack, or go out with them to dinner when they all go to a place that doesn't have anything that's Atkins-friendly. I have this little voice inside my head saying "one more time won't hurt"... and then my jeans tell me differently!

I've got to hang on this time... spring is coming and I'll want to start hitting the trail and exercising, so it's a must.

I'll see you guys again next Sunday...!

You better get that tape measure out!! It rules!!! I'll try to post a link later of where I lost the various inches. You can also find it in my "journal stats" link....it should be one of the last posts there.

                          Re: My Summertime Challenge

                          Okie, lost 1 lb.!!!

It's not much but it's a definite start.

Actually, my jeans are a bit looser. I know I've lost a bit in inches, too. Must remember to get that tape measure out of my truck, today or else?

Hey biogeek, where all do you measure on your body? Hips, waist, biceps, thighs?

The one thing I probably need to do much more of is: drink water! I need to put away 128oz. or more. Right now I'm getting down about half that. No problem with water, just don't drink a lot of anything - but that will change!

                          Okay, on to week two...

Hey, a pound gone is a pound gone!!! I'm not weighing or measuring myself this week because I feel like a bloated pig thanks to TOM. :/

Here's the link to my stats journal about where I measure & my report of inches lost.

                            biogeek's lost inches

There's another link on ADBB that tells you exactly where to measure at each place. I'll see if I can find that for you. I'm pretty sure there's a sticky that associated with the 6 week challenge.

I drink TONS of water! I feel like a darn fish sometimes! Drink that water!!!

                            Have a great week!
