  • The Try Something New Challenge!

    Hi everyone,

Could you buy your food shopping in your sleep? Haven't changed your gym or fitness routine for a while?

I'm definately guilty of these, especially the first one. I often eat quite a small selection of meals, my meats and veg are more limited than I'd like due to time, laziness and squeamishness (about most kinds of meat and seafood - being an ex-veggie, Atkins doesn't come too easy).

So, I've decided to challenge myself to try a new food each week and shake up my gym routine a bit.

Does anyone want to join me and Try Something New?

You don't have to sign up to do fitness and food, you could pick or choose, but do join me if you want to get out of a rut!

There are tons of recipes in DANDR, and on this site, that I haven't tried and there are lots of different ways to work out too

I'm going to do this for two months, posting as and when, but join me for as long as you like.

Baarb, excellent idea. I'll have to come up with something. I'm always trying new stuff.

    Maybe those shiritake noodles.

I'll join you! I'm in for the food portion...I am not bored, I just think I need to branch out more. I need to try some more exotic veggies, and perhaps eat more seafood.

Yay MaggiBe, Julirama and Valid Rouge - glad you'll join me!

I've tried two news things already:

          - I tried minced beef, which was major as I hadn't eaten beef for about 12 years and I thought it was horrible! Not a great start, but I'm going to try corned beef, lamb, turkey and seafood. Juli - I have major issues with slimey seafood, so I need to be brave.
          - I went to a bodypump work out today - like lots of reps with a light barbell (sounds a bit mad). But it was sooooo painful, it was great! My muscles will tone up for sure with this. Has anyone else tried it? It recommend it.

What about you guys - what's new?

I want in! Does it count if it's a new recipe instead of a new food? I don't know many new foods, but I'm sure I can find new recipes... like the coconut chicken one I was planning for tonight...

Re: The Try Something New Challenge!

I tried TWO new things this weekend.

I finally made that parmesan chicken--the kind that's breaded in parmesan and almond flour, fried in olive oil, then baked in the oven to melt cheese and warm the sauce. It was SOOOOO good! And it got me to try something else NEW--that coffee grinder I bought in OCTOBER! I made my own almond flour...I was amazed at how quickly it was ready--like, 2 seconds.

I also had a very unusual dinner (compared to what I usually eat) last night. Boiled prawns with stir-fry veggies. My boyfriend even liked the veggies!!! It was really good--we both liked how light but filling it was.

Re: The Try Something New Challenge!

Lyssie - anything new, food recipes is fine! How did the coconut chicken turn out?

Julirama - that is drool inducing. I really should try prawns as my BF loves them. I have issues will eating an entire creature in one go though, which I know is ridiculous! Is your coffee grinder electric? I'm thinking about getting one for when I start baking.

For me this week I think my new thing will be...heck, why not make it prawns. I hope I can eat more than a forkfull, unlike the beef.

Exercise wise I was re-visiting my old running schedule in order to be able to do a 5k in May. It went pretty well, but my sports bra is now ridiculously too big.

Why new stuff have other people been trying this week?

Re: The Try Something New Challenge!

Ok so I tried some prawns, I did the Scallops pesto recipe in DANDR but with prawns, served on raw spinach and rocket.

It took me about five minutes eating spinach leaves before I could put a prawn in my mouth! I forgot I had such food issues! But actually, they were quite nice. Chewier than I thought. I couldn't finish my portion, but ate about half so that is a start. I'll be having them again

I tried Greek Yogurt for the first time. I LOVE IT!

I'm also going to be having Daikon tonight for the first time. I'll let you all know how that goes.

Daikon is great--I just tried that about a month ago! I love it sliced and cooked in the oven.

Well, last week I tried cottage cheese and I LOVE IT. I never would even try it before Atkins, and now it's like, my favorite breakfast food, mixed with some frozen berries.

Oh, and I tried a curry last week! I'd had one before, at this great Indian restaurant in Cleveland (of all places, right!?) but this is the first time I've ever made one! It was sooooooooooo good.

I love greek yoghurt, and curry - please share the recipe Julie - I couldn't figure a way of making my normal curry 'legal'.

I don't think I'll ever have an appetite for cottage cheese again - anyone who has done Body for Life may have an idea why...cottage cheese (low fat or fat free none the less) morning, noon and night

I'm going to try corned beef today big whoop, you may say, but a big thing for me

The daikon was just "ok". I'm going to try to cook it some other ways before I totally nix it. But it wasn't delicious. I've found I only eat food anymore if it's delicious!

                          I'm a snob.

                          heh.
