*Only the above members should post in this topic. If you are not on the list but would like to join, please click on the link below and your name will be added. You must have a 2002 edition of DANDR to participate, hardcover or softcover is fine.

To maintain focus, discussion should be limited to the reading of DANDR, and any of the items listed as follows:

    Purpose of this group:

1)To develop a working knowledge and understanding of the Atkins WOL by reading the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.
    2) To provide a forum to ask questions on any of the material the group is reading that you do not understand;
    3) To share comments on what you've read and what you believe is most important to successful Atkins, and
    4) To apply what you've read to your current Atkins situation -- what have you read that you need to improve on or change? What have you read that you didn't know/understand before?

Questions on the current chapter(s) will be posted each Sunday evening before the start of a new chapter. These questions are intended to just give us a "jump start" on that week's discussions. Members can post and discuss any and all other subject pertaining to that week's or previous weeks' reading.

At the end of each week, the group will decide how many weeks we need to fully cover the next chapter.

Each Chapter will be discussed in it's own thread - and that thread will be titled DANDR READING GROUP Chapter XXX, (Topic XXX)

If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, let me know!

SUGGESTION: When you post, to eliminate a lot of extra length to all the posts, consider clicking OFF the "attach signature" box at the bottom of the page. This will eliminate pictures, weight counters, etc. But do be sure and "sign" your post with your name!

    Group questions for:
PREFACE & CHAPTER 1 "The Promise"

    1. What did Dr. Atkins state was the “perfect dietary plan” to create a nation of fat, tired, unhealthy people?

    2. Dr. Atkins stated that in addition to weight loss, we will receive an additional more important benefit by following his WOE. What is it?

    3. What are the “Four Principles of the Atkins Nutritional Approach”?

OK, I will start off the discussion.

I read the Preface and Chapter 1 once over the weekend and then again today. I enjoyed reading those chapters because I had not read them since I first opened the book in August of 2003.

The part that meant the most to me was the Four Principals of Atkins Nutritional Approach. Of course I had read them in the past and I knew them, but it just reinforces my reasoning for staying on Atkins WOE.

The one Principal that meant the most to me: You will get Healthy! I do not want to get high BP, like the rest of my family and I was borderline before Atkins. I do not want to get Diabetes and I am at risk. I do not want to die young as so many of my cousins have.

I read it also this weekend, and I read the Preface for the first time and I learned something. He said that there is no medical study about this WOE being harmful to the kidneys. I wonder where that info came from!!!!

I need to work, so Ill be back with more on Chapter 1.

It actually made me sad to read Dr. Atkins' description and statistics of the "low fat craze" which hurt so many people and contributed to the increase of obesity in our country. I spent a grueling year in 2003 on low fat/low cal. I was hungry all the time, I did not feel healthy, I had no energy, and I literally craved protein. I lost 25 lbs in that year but that was the only benefit, as I look back now and compare the two WOE's.

I'd curious as to how many others here in the group succumbed to the "low fat craze" - your comparison of the two WOE's, and the differences you see in the two (besides the obvious food differences).

And Lynne, I too was surprised about the kidney information - that not one study had actually been done to back that accusation up! I know we've seen a few posts here on ADBB asking the same thing. Now we have a more knowledgeable answer to give!

Joan, here's one more that was on low-fat diets. All I did was starve, had low energy and gained over 100 lbs over the years. About 10 years ago I quit "dieting" because I knew that "dieting" was the one thing that was making me fatter.

I do truly Thank God that I found Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. I love this WOE. I am not always hungry and I have so much more energy. I sleep better, too!

I just sat down and read the preface and chapter 1.

The perfect plan to create a nation of fat, tired, unhealthy people is the LOW FAT & HIGH CARB diet I was raised on and have tried to live on for most of my life.

In addition to weight loss, we will receive A METHOD OF LIVING A LONG, HEALTHY LIFE by following his WOE.

The “Four Principles of the Atkins Nutritional Approach” are weight loss, maintenance of weight loss, good health and the permanent groundwork for disease prevention

Upon opening my DANDR I discovered that I bought it on April 19, 2004. I have wasted 7 months doing Atkins wrong before I found ha and started working it so much better. I have only read portions of my DANDR so I expect to learn a lot on this challenge.

I lost a friend to diabetes about 3 years ago and what absolutely kills me was how hard she tried to stay with the ADA diet, and she was convinced that Atkins was so unhealthy because her doctors were all against it.
I morn her loss everyday, but more, I dedicate my work on this board to her memory as I hope that one person will find us and one person will live.
                Sorry, off topic.

Do you want to know why I am ticked?

I sat and read very carefully the assignment. Then I came here and typed out a response that took me 30 minutes because I chose very carefully what I wanted to say and it was perfect, albeit a bit lengthy. You would have been proud, Joan!

I hit "send" and the board went kerplooey!

                  :mad2

I will save everything to Word before posting it here!

I'm not mad at the board or admin but at the situation.

Dang, Lynn! I hope you guys don't think I'm ticked at you or any mods here or administrators! I'm really not! It's a Murphy's Law kind of thing! Most of the time I post silly stupid things and those go through just fine! But as soon as I try and use all 5 brain cells and put thoughtfulness into something and hit "send" after even proofreading and editing it three times, then I lose a post!

Oh well. It could have been worse. I could have seen myself naked today.

(Sorry about your troubles, Cleo! Try again!)

I was just sitting here reading the sub-section in THE FOUR PRINCIPLES OF ATKINS NUTRITIONAL APPROACH - titled A TYPICAL SUCCESS STORY. The story ends with "I didn't feel deprived. I felt alive!"

I don't think I've read another phrase that sums up how I feel or why I can so easily pass by the sweets and treats that are offered to me at work, at restaurants, etc. I honestly don't feel deprived. In fact, it's getting to the point where my reaction to those foods and desserts is automatic - the "temptation" part has gone by the wayside, now it's just a simple "no, thank you, I don't eat that." It's similar to spending your whole life NOT liking eggs (which I don't). So... I don't make a big deal about it, I don't feel "deprived" because I don't eat eggs....I just don't eat them. And that's the auto-pilot point I've gotten to about foods with flour or sugar.... "I don't eat that". Instead of getting harder, it's getting easier to say no. Because..... as said in this Success Story - I don't feel deprived, I feel alive!"

well Lynne I will be happy to explain where the myth of high protein causes kidney damage comes from in here if Joan, the boss lets me? You know how much I like to let the 2Big brain leak out. hehe
you can find it on the board if it didn't go in the culling too.
