  • DANDR READING GROUP Chapter II - THE BASICS

Great discussion on our Chapter 1! (Apologies for being late to start Chapter II)

This week we'll be reading Chapter II - UNDERSTANDING SOME BASICS. We'll discuss this through Sunday, Jan. 23.

    Questions for this Chapter:

    1. What is "metabolism"?
    2. What is the "metabolic advantage"?
    3. Dr. Atkins states that what most people know about his diet is that you can lose a lot of weight rapidly. But what does he consider the "key point" of his diet?
    4. Dr. Atkins says that this WOE works "because...it corrects the basic factor that controls obesity and influences risk factors for certain illnesses." What is that factor?

I was going to jump in and start it and just couldn't get to it either.

After reading Chapter one, I decided it was my favorite and now that I've manage to read, really read chapter 2, I think its also my favorite.

The first section on "Dont Excess Calories Cause Weight Gain" really was an eye opener for me as I don't think that I really understood this well and now I do and now a lot of what 2big has been trying to tell me, sunk in. Calorie count only when you eat excess carbs.
Don't eat carbs, don't worry about calories.

Also, I like this chapter because it explains why low fat diets don't work. I mean they don't work for me because I always feel deprived and dream of ice cream.

      DANDR Chapter 2

Like Lynne said this chapter was sort of an eye opener. The part about excess calories was very interesting. We've all been told that calories don't count when LCing. To a degree I'd say that's true, especially in the first 2 weeks. I had a discussion about Atkins this very morning with the guys down at our local mom and pop cafe. They were all under the impression that we just eat lots and lots of meat and butter and mayo and can eat a gazillion calories. Having read this section last night I explained to them about the way Atkins works. I said yes, that in the first 2 weeks we don't count calories, just the carbs and fiber we take in. But that our calorie intake is not unlimited. Dr. Atkins says that if we take in "fewer calories-as many Atkins people do because their appetite is usually diminished-you'll likely lose wait even faster." So as long as we're watching our carbs, eating till we're satified...not going hungry...it's ok to eat fewer calories. We don't have to eat 2,000 calories a day. Eating fewer calories is ok as long as you're not hungry. It's sort of a natural thing that happens with this WOE.
      Now on to the questions.

      1. What is "metabolism"?
Metabolism is what you have when the physical and chemical processes turn food into energy.

I've always thought I had a slow metabolism, and I have made it that way myself by doing the low-fat/low-calorie thing for so many years. I just seemed to get fatter and was hungry all the time. But with Atkins, the more I eat,(the right things of course), the more weight I'll lose.

      2. What is the "metabolic advantage"?
It is the burning of fat, which takes more energy, so you burn more calories.

      3. Dr. Atkins states that what most people know about his diet is that you can lose a lot of weight rapidly. What does he consider the "key point" of his diet?
It is that the weight doesn't return. (as long as this is a lifetime WOE for you)

      4. Dr. atkins says that this WOE works "because...it corrects the basic factor that controls obesity and influences risk factors for certain illnesses." What is that factor?
That factor is excessive insulin levels.

And again he talks about Atkins being the easiest way to maintain weight loss. This was a good chapter and I loved the tips at the end
        Eliminate sugar from your kitchen
. Sugar has to be the number one problem for all of us, sugar is in just about everything.
When grocery shopping, stick to the aisles on the permeter of the store
. Except in the stores that have the bread there.
Look for and purchase the ever-increasing selection of controlled carb food alternatives to low fat, high sugar
. Yep, if you have to have it, go for the low carb version every time.
        Use a carb gram counter.
I use Colleen McSomebodys, its at work.
Avoid typical high-carb breakfast choices even if you are not trying to lose weight
Boy, think about our breakfast before we read Atkins, orange juice, cereal with low fat milk, toast, bagels, pancakes, french toast, wow.

I love this chapter because he blows the doors wide open on the myth that low-calorie low-fat diets are the key to weight loss and health!

And, as regards the french (as is mentioned in Atkins and for good reason), I have been reading articles about french women and their being some of the least obese in the world. Here is a good link for anyone who might be interested in this.

Well, I have to tell you I'm behind on my reading (behind on my housework, behind on my home business, behind on everything except Boot Camp!) I'm sorry I've been so neglectful of this reading group, especially considering I started it! Can you'all bear with me just through Monday? I need to get out from under Boot Camp and caught up on my home business stuff.

If anyone would like to do an intro to Chapter III - How You'll Succeed - please feel free. I'll get caught up on my reading between now and Tuesday, and jump back in with both feet!

THEN I'm PMing everyone that hasn't been contributing :guns and we'll get this reading group rolling!!!!
