      Re: OPERATION "NO SWEETS" CHALLENGE

      Hi,
I recently came in from grocery shopping, and made sure I did not buy anything with added sweeteners. However, I did buy the super, duper bag of Splenda a few weeks ago. I have to get it out of my house!! I did not know it was so dangerous! My husband loves it in his tea and my teenage daughter even uses it! Tomorrow, when I leave for work, the Splenda will just 'disappear'. I had no idea it was full of dangerous chemicals. Thanks so much for the information!

            Hello Asoprano,
Great to see you here. Great job on the shopping without "sweetners".
I threw away the Splenda in my house as well. I was baking and keeping it readily available for my family. When I went sweetfree over a month ago I wanted to know exactly what Splenda was made of. After my findings I replaced the Splenda with Smart Sweet, a natural sweetner Xyletol, a derivitive of hardwood Birch. My family loves it. It has no carbs, it also has other health benifits. Which I will get into throughout the challenge. I buy my Xylitol from Long Life Unlimited which you will find their web site in my siggy. If anyone is interested in a natural healthy sweetner. That's the place to buy it. I am not affiliated with this company. Just a satisfied customer. Tell them Motherearth sent you.

Dogs and cats will gladly lap up antifreeze because it's tasty, being poisoned to death in the process. Aren't we doing the same thing to ourselves with some of this stuff?

I'm starting to become quite thankful I have reactions so strongly and quickly to some of this stuff.

Good morning, Sherri and fellow no-sweetner challengers!

This morning I ate my pumpkin 'savory-style' -- with butter and salt rather than splenda and cinnamon. It was okay... I guess I'll get used to it.

Sherri, just to confirm, even though it's natural, Xylitol also shouldn't be eaten during this challenge, correct?

I have a feeling that giving up "sweets" is going to be harder than giving up sugar ever was.... on to day 2!

I didn't think of it that way...but what a GREAT analogy!

                      Day 2 of no sweetners.
Today is day 1 of no coffee for me too. I'd been drinking it black for a long time. Switched to decaf black a few weeks ago, and I've decided it's time to give it up altogether. I'm tired of the cravings. I'm tired of hunger. I'm tired of lethargy. I want peace back in my system.

                        Can Splenda Cause Weight Gain?

Yes, all diet sweetners can cause weight gain for many reasons. The body doesn't consider Splenda (or any chemicle sweetner) as food; therefore, fake sugars don't satisfy your body's demand for nourishment, which in turn increases your craving for real food.
Simple carbs (manmade sugar) pass through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. This means weight gain, increased fat, and elevated blood sugar that can lead to weight gain. And Splenda is a Simple Carbohydrate!
Carbohydrates are the most abundant source of energy found in nature. They are products of plant photosynthesis, which provide the plants fuel for life in the form of sugar. When we eat Complex Carbs, we are eating the plants energy, which in turn becomes our energy. When we eat the right kind of carbs, we are providing our bodies with fuel so we can perform daily activities from thinking about work to walking up a flight of stairs. If you are eating a balanced diet with reasonable sized portions, carbohydrates from Natural Sugars, should not cause weight gain. But these days we are people of the "fear of Carbs and sugar" WOL, and the artificial sweetners manufacturers seem to be taking advantage of this with a "sugar-free" marketing frenzy. And don't forget that Splenda is a simple carb.

Im not a coffee drinkder but do appreciate the taste from time to time and this let me feel like I was having something too.

How ever, after just a few sips, i would always get this strange headache. Not bad, just annoying pressure. Next time I will get to find out if its the decaf coffee or the sweetener doing this. I got this when i ate some whipped sweetened cream with cocoa powder as well. coffee and cocoa share a lot of ingredients they are similar arent they?

Looking forward to seeing if its the sweetener or the other stuff.

                              Hello Mindy,
Yes, coffee and cocoa are very similar, they both have caffeine in them. It really is a joy to discover once again the natural flavors in foods. If you think about it. When we're babies and given solids for the first time from our loving parents, the foods are wholesome with no preservatives. Unfortunately that healthy concepts gets lost when we are then allowed to eat "people food" (processed food) as we get older. We lose that taste for natural foods. It truly is a transition period and a time to adapt our tastebuds. It takes time, and determination to get back that natural taste for foods.
One thing I discovered as a cook and a long abuser of fast foods is when you order the food and you smell that smell in the bag when you get your order, you think it's the food you smell. It's actually the paper the food is wrapped in that you smell. Check it out next time you're with someone at BK or Mc D's. Smell the paper. It's not the food we're smelling .
