US poised to rule on cloned livestock

Meat and milk from cloned farm animals is about to be declared safe for human consumption by the US Food and Drug Administration, one of the world's most powerful regulatory bodies.

A favourable risk assessment from the FDA is expected to start the commercial exploitation of cloning to improve livestock quality around the world.

FDA officials told the BIO 2005 biotech industry conference they had completed a four-year assessment process and concluded that cloned animals and their progeny would be as safe to eat as conventionally bred animals. They also found that cloning was acceptable from the viewpoint of animal welfare.

Scientists said the first pork and beef from cloned animals could reach the market next year. John Matheson, senior regulatory scientist at the FDA, said uncertainty in the US government about the ethics of animal cloning had delayed publication of the assessment.

I have to say I don't think that the fact it had been cloned would bother me much. I guess I would like to see heard evidence that it's safe, but I'm not against it in principle!

I'm betting like everything else, if you eat meat you'll end up eating cloned animals, knowingly or not. Even if they make them label the meat clearly as cloned you know that won't always happen. Just like that genetically altered corn that wasn't susposed to be for human consumption ended up in taco shells.

I guess I haven't really researched enough into cloned animal meat for starters...

I just wish they'd stop poking needles into the animals to make them grow fatter for consumption, full of all sorts of hormones which in turn affect us as the consumer....

I don't know if this is true but I heard that's one reason why girls are developing so much earler than they use to. Girls seem to be getting breasts and getting their periods at much younger ages than they did years ago. Again, I don't know if the hormones in meat products really is the reason. I just remember reading it somewhere.

I haven't decided if I'll eat meat or drink milk from cloned animals. But, I do hope they will at least put it on the labels so that we know what we're getting.

I hope they've improved their techniques since Dolly the sheep. She only lived to half the age of a regular sheep and she had ailments that usually affect older sheep. She was euthanized.

And I'm glad to hear that you don't want to eat Gizmo! LOL :tounge
