What do we think about a Draft?

Yes, Leslie, I've read your posts about your children before and they seem like very fine kids. I applaud your son for being so caring and being involved in humanitarian efforts.

But how many others do you know? I see a lot of soft, shallow, spoiled kids in the world. Still, I really shouldn't paint all young people with the same broad brush stroke. I'm sorry.

Theres exeptions to the rules, but the majority of todays Youth makes me sick. I was telling my nephew yesterday, I couldn't go back to high school. I would get into to many fights! If I am not telling people to pull up their pants, its going to be to stop being stupid, do your work and makes something of yourself. Drop the "Gang" mentality, the "whole world is against me" attitude and step up and do something constructive.

Instead of sitting around looking for something bad to do, look for something good. Pick up trash instead of destroying property with your so called "art".

I see lots of shallow kids, and adults.

I don't care for teenagers on the whole either. But, it's always been that way for kids and adults that are shallow....rock-n-roll motorcycle gangs in the 50s, hippies in the 60s and 70s, coke sniffin' materialistic stock traders in the 80's, dot-com BMW drivers in the 90s...reality show mentality in the 2000s. Shallow is shallow.

My point is just that for me personally, just because I don't support my kids going to Iraq, doesn't mean we don't care about the US or that we are un-American. The Iraqi war just smells a little too much like a corporate takeover to me....ooooh, did I say that outloud? ;-)

I'm not offended, or upset, by all means...(Piasabird..you know me...I'm a big girl with thick skin).

And, by the way...I've said this before...I think W is a hottie and I'd love to drink tequila with him.

My nephew is a Staff Sergeant in the Army. He was full time army, spent his 21st birthday in Bosnia and that whole mess. Did 6 years, then got out and joined the Louisiana National Guard. Got a job with the Guard working with teenage boys run afoul of the law - they go to a boot camp type prison. He had just graduated his first class when their unit got called up to go to Iraq. He's been there since last fall and God willing, will be coming home in a couple of months. They are in Baghdad and he just lost one of his Sergeants to a roadside bomb a couple of weeks ago. :sadblinky

He was worried when they were called up because most of his men and even his immediate superiors had no real experience - even his superiors looked to him. But as much as he wants to be home, he has said there is no way he wouldn't have gone over there.

A lot of young people join the military for the college money. We saw it in the first Gulf War where they were freaking out that they had to go to war. They really thought they'd never have to fight for anything and that's just damn scary.

I try not to think about it too much because it will drive you insane.

Things in Iraq are really very chaotic and hopeless. I don't support and never supported Saddam Hussein, but one of the things that really upsets me, is the leaders in Iraq are criminals. For example, Ahmed Chalabi is wanted in Jordan for embezzling millions of dollars from Jordan bank... Ibrahim Jafaari used to kill student protesters, protesting the Iran/Iraq war back in the 1980's, as the leader of the Islamic Dawah party. What good will it do for the Iraqi people? At the end of the day, its the Iraqi people who own the lands and will live there. There has been much talk about the different groups which make up the Iraqi population (Shia, Sunni, Kurdish, Christian, etc etc), which is true, but in reality, these differences exist in every family. In most Iraqi family your mother in law might be Shia, your father in law Kurdish, your brothers wife might be Sunni, etc etc.

I guess I want to know where the WMD's are that this invasion was based on.

As a past and once again new volunteer in the armed forces, I am glad that there is not a draft. When you sign the line as I just did, you should be fully aware what is and could be expected of you. Stop losses are just one more part of that. The units I have been a part of have always had extremely high retention rates even after deployments. Iowa in fact despite having the highest or near the highest reserve deployment rates still is over-strength and no problems meeting recruiting numbers. (Getting a day at MEPS -- Military Entrance Processing Station -- had to be put off for a week or two because the time slots were booked solid.) The problem might exist in the nation as a whole, but in this section of the nation, people are still lining up to serve.

As for my kids, I'll let them know full well what they would be signing up for if they decide to serve, but there is no way I would ever discourage them not to not sign themselves up.

While some of these posts are really funny. (Reminds me of Jon Stewart on the Daily Show....) This type of thread was sort of doomed from the start. Religion, politics, and men's IQs should never be discussed in mixed company. To be honest...when I mentioned fleeing to Costa Rica...I was really thinking more about beaches, cocktails, and half-naked men.

Being a Canadian (we have no draft and haven't for some time, from what i know) I'll stay out of the political aspects of this thread..

but will say about the above? all the teens in my family are shallow spoiled self centred and disrespectful and would laugh at the though of fighting for anything other than they're own belonings. We have a really decent family with strong work ethics and values, these kids have been raised as well as any others... You're very lucky leslie... I only know one or two 'decent' teenagers out of a dozen including friends and famly ...they're very rare. And i can find no rhyme or reason to the bad behaviour of most...

Well I wouldn't like it. I have twin boys who will be 15 next month. But you know if there was a draft they would have to go.

I really and firmly believe that America is worth fighting for. If I had to sacrifice myself or my sons to the cause I would. I wouldn't like it but thats the bottom line. :no

And quite personally if you all live in this country and don't believe its worth fighting for or sacrificing, then please leave, quickly, on the next boat. Go to India, Europe, Russia, or some 3rd world country, and I'll guarantee you'll be ready to come home and pick up the gauntlet.

BTW...do people who live in this country and have a green card or have migrated as a citizen will they be eligible for the draft?
