I found a stray cat yesterday when walking with my hubby. She is pregnant. She has on a hot pink collar, but no tags and she was following everyone she saw trying to get into their apts.

I've spent the last hour calling no-kill shelters and none of them are taking in animals right now. I have no idea what to do. Animal control will take her, but kill her.

She's so friendly and sociable. She's a pretty cat and is very friendly. I don't know how far along she is in her pregnancy.

Any ideas or tips? Right now I'm leaning towards terminating her pregnancy and trying to find her a home. I hate that thought, but I can't care for my 3 cats, her, and her kittens and last time I took in strays it took me months to find a home for them. She wouldn't be easy to find a home for, but she's pretty and it would be easier to find just her a home as opposed to five or six cats.

Ideas? Advice? Help please! I want to do the right thing.

Slip her a morning after pill and find her a good home. Actually, forget the pill but you're right it would be easier to find her a home instead of her and 6 kittens. Gotta do what you think is best for her.

Don't kill her or the kittens. Make some calls around and see what options there are.

I know in the Atlanta area they have a wonderful organization and website that helps for finding homes for pets: http://www.spotsociety.org/

They might have some links or ideas there to give you ideas, if you don't live around that area, and maybe you can call and ask if there is something similar in your area, such as animal/pet rescue or fostering.

Right now it is kitten season. I saw about a dozen kittens at Petsmart's Adoption Day the other day. I wish I could adopt them all

Because people get pets and don't own up to the responsbility of taking care of them, including getting them spayed/neutered, tens of thousands of former pets are euthanized.

If you are ever looking for a pet, puppy or full grown, I highly encourage people to check with breed rescue organizations or your local shelters first. There are thousands of wonderful pets needing homes.

Or you could take the responsibility on yourself to take care of the kittens until they are old enough to give away (and encourage whoever takes them to get them spayed/neutered).

Hubby and I talked about it last night and we can't in good conscience kill the babies. Killing the mom was out of the question from the get go.

Everywhere is full right now, so I have no place to take her. She's so sweet and friendly. Makes me sick that people won't take care of their pets.

          So, here's our current options:

          1. Keep trying the shelters. There's one more I haven't tried that's closed Mon. and Tues., so I'll try tomorrow. I actually have a slight connection there, so hopefully.

          2. Let mamma have the babies and try to find them all homes when they are done nursing. Then we either try and find a home for mamma or keep her if we're too attached by then.

          Anyone want a kitten?

Unfortunately, there's an over abundance of cats / kittens everywhere. The best thing to do to remedy the situation is to stop them from populating.

I hope that who ever takes the kittens when they're old enough will get them spaded or neutered. Otherwise the cycle just continues.

It's really heartbreaking with no easy answers. :sadblinky

I would try putting an ad in the local newspaper under lost and found. Since she has a collar my guess would be she has a home and is just lost.

LEts see.. if you were in my neighborhood, you'd put the cat in a box and drop it on my porch.. or just put the cat in my yard since cats hang out here we must want more cats. :raving Or even better you could wait until my kids were out front playing and ask them if the cat was ours. :sarcasm thats how we ended up with Butterscotch and her 6 kittens.

If you put an ad in the paper don't describe the cat to a t... that way people won't call just because they want that kind of cat.

Call the shelters in your area and ask them if they keep a book of lost animal flyers? The shelter I volunteered at did that. Also ask the shelter if there are any organizations in the area like FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) or Friends of Cats.. places like that which can probably help?

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm known as the cat lady in the area. I have a big heart, but only so much room and money.

I'm not sure about finding the owners because who loses track of their pregnant cat? Why a collar with no tag on it? Her collar was horrible too. It was all plastic and no cat safety latch on it. My gut tells me she was abandoned. I might try that though if I can't get her to a shelter by the end of the week.

Cat could've gotten out a window left open or ran out the door between someone's legs.. a whole bunch of things could've happened. She also could've gotten pregnant while she was out. Is the collar one of those plastic flea collars? A lot of cats don't have tags on.. none of the cats in our neighborhood do anyway.

Good luck getting her into a shelter or finding someone to take her.

If I can tell she's preg, then she's at least 5 weeks along. According to information I've checked out on cat pregnancy.

The SPCA called me back. They said they'd take her, but abort her. They also said they wouldn't kill her as long as she was sociable. I don't feel right about taking her there, so I'll wait on the other place tomorrow. The other place won't kill her or the kittens.

Does your state have microchips for pets? My cat had one put in when I got her at the Humane Society...if she gets lost they scan the chip and can see where she belongs.
