Lavender oil for burns?

I've been told by my cousin, a licensed massage thearpist, to use lavender oil for sun burns--has anyone had any luck with this? The price is gee-gooly high $19 for a small bottle, but I'd do just about anything to help get back into some kind of normal skin...lol.

I've never heard of lavender oil before, but I'm not a licensed anything! My DH had a wicked sunburn on the weekend, the only thing I could find in the house was the baby lotion! It had aloe & vitamin E which are both recommended for sunburn. I put it one & he felt better immediately, by morning he was much less red. It helped him not to peel as much too. If you can find aloe gel, usually next to the sunscreen (duh!) in the store, it works wonders & it's probably cheaper!

When I lived in Arizona I used to burn really badly at the beginning of summer. You think I would've learned my lesson eventually. Anyway, by far the best thing for a sunburn (that I've found) is cool wet wash cloths or towels. Run em under water, wring them out and place on the burn. Once it's not cool...repeat. It takes a bit of work but it really whisks the heat away. A cool (but not too cold) bath can help too. There's also some silver something cream that a doctor can prescribe that works really well. The washcloth method is nice because it's immediate and free. I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the advise!---so far I'm sticking with the "Ocean Potion" Instant burn relife ICE aloe vera/lidocaine/tea tree extract stuff; it's working, but not fast enough! lol!--I made the mistake of scrubbing my legs with my lufa sponge..eeeeyaooww..and scraped off a thin layer of skin--guess that will start the healing process and hopefully avoid the peeling;lol...we'll see. I'm in the debate of heading to the health market in town tomorrow if I can't sleep much tonight--I could buy a lot of fun foo foo stuff for me for $19! lol!--thanks for the help!

THe "silver something" that bugaboo is referring to is silver nitrate which goes by the brand name Silvadene. It is available by presciption only but it is amazing stuff. I know because I was burned once and I use the leftover for small burns and they usually heal overnight.

But if not the aloe gel is the way to go.

Silver Nitrate is used in veterinary work often to stop bloodflow. Evidently it reacts with blood or something, to cause it to coagulate quickly. When I started veterinary science classes in college, and I clipped a dog's nails too close and got some blood, we used silver nitrate sticks to stop the bleeding.

Boy, the dogs didn't seem to like it much!

Hmmm every time we got burned as kids my mom would bring out the solarcaine. If we needed soothing, out came the tub of noxema hand creme and we'd lather that on. It cools the skin to take the zing out of a burn, and moisturizes too yet.

I agree with Kim & Jim - if you can get oil of aloe vera, or even better still fresh aloe vera leaves, squeezed slightly to get the oils out, and place on the burns - it is REALLY GOOD, better than anything I know or heard of for burns.

She's talking about essential oils used in aromatherapy. Lavender is one of the few oils that can be applied directly to the skin, without being diluted in a carrier oil first. However, I wouldn't use it on a sunburn because it is potent and could cause further irritation.

You could add a few drops to whatever lotion you are using, or get a naturally prepared skin care product that contains lavender.

Try taking a bath with vinegar added to the water. I use white distilled vinegar, but any kind you have on hand will do. It works wonders. Don't worry about the smell it goes away, so you won't end up smelling like a pickle.

thanks for all your advise---DH and I have been slathering on the "Ocean Potion" and I think we've nipped the pain in the bud, for the most part. I still can't be directly in the sun or have sunlight remotely touch my legs---eeeeoooww! lol! But I can walk without feeling like Larry from the Carol Burnet Show! lol! ---((hugs)) to all of you! The lavender oil is part of the aroma therapy and I found out to use it you probably need to add a moisturiser with it to keep from drying out.

Lavender makes you relax so maybe you just don't care that your hurting. LOL. Aloe is what I use for any and all burns. Remember sunburns equal wrinkles so use that sunscreen,
