Suspect Caught When He Stopped To Help Someone

(CBS) CHICAGO A West Side man says he needed to get to work, and he made a decision that he'll probably regret.

Now Miguel Espinosa is in jail for stealing a marked Chicago police squad car.

Detectives say the 38-year-old Espinosa noticed the squad car outside a restaurant on North Western Avenue Thursday night.

The officer had left the keys in it while he went inside to eat. So Espinosa stole it and drove to work at the Whole Food Bakery House.

The suspect stopped to help someone who flagged him down Friday morning. That's when police nabbed him.

Espinosa is in jail on $350,000 bond.

Who leaves their keys in the ignition nowadays? That, right there, should've told the dude something was up.

Either this guy is extremely dedicated to his place of employment or he's just a straight up, run-of-the-mill, car thief or at least out for a joy ride. Too bad that now he'll have to miss work while he's IN JAIL!

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if he made the whole story up. Kind of like when the perpetrators run on the show "Cops" and the police officers have to chase them down. When they're caught, they almost always say that they're innocent but that they ran because they were afraid. Who tells them to say this stuff? Do they have group meetings and go over what to tell the cops when they're caught? Oh, and the drunk drivers always say that they've only had 2 beers. Yeah, sure.

    Just wondering.

Why does it say "perpetrators" in small type in your post?

I think if I was a car thief and saw keys in the ignition of a patrol car I would back away--after all, it was a "marked patrol car" Come on, how stupid can you get?

I don't know. I thought I looked at it before I clicked the mouse to post it and it looked fine. I did have it spelled wrong at first (when will we get spell check?) and I found the correct spelling, then copied it and inserted it in my text. But I previewed it and I thought it didn't look different at first. BTW, last night I looked at something I had posted in someone's journal a few days ago. It was all weirded out. Part of my paragraph was much larger than the rest of the print. It was fine when I posted it. So, I highlighted the bad part and tried to fix it by making the letters a size 2 and it wouldn't change. I couldn't make it change! So I deleted it and wrote something else.

        Now, back to topic .......

Look at his mug shot! He looks like one tough m f'er! And, you ask how stupid can you get? Obviously pretty darn stupid. I've seen crack heads do some pretty stupid stuff.

This board does do some weird stuff sometimes. Plus, it went down yesterday and today! I thought that wasn't susposed to happen anymore since we "upgraded"

You're right though, people do do some really stupid things, nothing should really surprise us anymore.

BTW I like your siggy quote!
