  • France Gas thefts at faulty pump

GRENOBLE, France (AP) - A court has convicted 17 people for stealing thousands of litres of gasoline from a faulty pump at a service station in southeastern France, officials said Thursday.
The 17 drivers had their driving licences suspended for a month, the office said. Two other people whose licences already were suspended were fined $300 US in Wednesday's ruling.

A total of 224 people pumped out at least 30,000 litres of gasoline between November 2002 and February 2003 after two drivers noticed free gasoline pouring out when they inserted their credit cards into the machine.

One man visited the faulty pump at the service station in Colombe 18 times in a week and another woman took about 960 litres of gasoline in 33 visits.

The 205 other gasoline cheats, all identified by their credit cards, were not tried because they visited the pump fewer than 10 times and paid back the money owed, the court sai

I wonder how they knew it was free if it didn't "pour out" until after they inserted their credit cards?

I've ended up with things in my grocery bags that I didn't pay for and I always go back and either pay for it or give it back. My conscience is a screamer and I can't rest until things are set right. We found a wallet on the street once and it was chock full of 20's and 50's. Even though we were extremely strapped for cash we took it directly to the police station because the drivers license was out of town. A few days later my husband's work gave him a few $100 American Express gift checks as a thank you for working endless hours on some project. Even if that hadn't happened at least I was able to sleep peacefully that night knowing I did the right thing.

Yea, I'm cursed with being honest and having a conscience as well. I went to the night deposit box one nite and reached in to get a deposit envelope but the one I grabbed was about 3/4 of an inch thick! someone had put their deposit where the xtra envelopes go instead of in the night deposit slot! Yikes! I did hesitate about 10 seconds--felt like a lot of cash! But I put it in the slot--poor slob never even knew they did it I'm sure. But I never would have been able to sleep if I had kept it, I know that!

Re: France Gas thefts at faulty pump

HMMMMM... I sit both sides of the fence on this one... I am the type that gives back extra change or returns money on the floor if I saw who dropped it, or can figure it out... BUT..

COME ON... 4 months, and the station wasnt watching to books to see thousands of gallons of gas in discrepancies????? Sounds like Darwinism in action, some people just have it coming.

Second, ex used to sell the fixtures for gas stations, and many of their customers were those buying replacements or needing "service" because they were about to be inspected by Wieghts and Measures, and OOPS, their pumps were not putting out a full, consistant gallon, constantly shorting customers, most of whom never even look, just fill up and go on. He says that the owner who doesnt rigg their pumps is the rarity. So I guess I kind of feel like maybe it evens things out...

But mostly, someone should have caught on WAY before four months, especially if this was putting out as much gas as they say.

Am SURE my pastor would say different, and perhaps I am just grumpy. Oh well.
