  • Phone number brings almighty problems

Five or six times a week, week in and week out, stretching now into year in and year out, somebody calls Dawn Jenkins' cell phone and asks to speak to God.

It's not a hoax. It's not somebody trying to drive Jenkins crazy, although she acknowledges it might be having that effect.

The St. Petersburg resident is the victim of a bad decision by a very big and important movie maker. Universal Studios used Jenkins' number in the 2003 Jim Carrey hit, Bruce Almighty. In fiction, it was supposed to be God's phone number. In reality, Universal thought it was nobody's phone number.

You mean you're further south than I am and you don't know the word "reckon"? How about "yonder"?

I thought that movies, t.v. shows, etc. had to go with a 555 number. If it bothers her so much she should just change her number, jewelry business or not. I wonder how much money she's going to sue them for?

She's not the only one who's getting phone calls for God.

Jenkins isn't alone in her plight. The number on Carrey's character's pager also matches the one assigned to a South Carolina woman who declined to give her name, but said she's been "getting aggravated to death" by the incessant calling.

It also matches the number for a call center to a group of five Colorado talk-radio stations. Ron Nickel, senior vice president for the Radio Colorado Network, was worried what would happen Tuesday, the first regular office workday since the movie's release. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/05/27/entertainment/main555630.shtml
I also found out that supposedly the phone number was changed for the dvd version.
