  • Atkins Nutritionals Files Bankruptcy!!! Your thoughts are welcome...

I saw this on the news and was really shocked by it! Who would have known they were in this much debt... I did notice some of the products were discontinued and wondered if it was just due to a new product put in its place. Nope...seems like according to the reports no one wants them. There are a lot of info out there on this but here is a link to get u started http://cbs11tv.com/health/health_story_212202923.html .

What are your thoughts on this?

This topic seems weary to me. It's been all over the forums and newspapers and I'm sick of the headline (nothing personal, it's just so sensationalised), but to answer your question, it didn't surprise me at all. The current company and the doctor's program are eons apart IMO.

The bankruptcy doesn't mean they're out of business, but they're cutting out a ton of the products they had expanded into. Wherever they go doesn't personally matter to me. I've always done the diet by the book and will continue to do that -- which doesn't call for any of the Atkins-label products. On the grander scale, I'd love to see the company get back to promoting the program itself, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that!

Good point! If u do it by the book it really will not matter that they are filing for bankruptcy protection. What I don't understand is why did they ruin a good thing? If you look at the new 2005 induction menu, it includes fajitas if I'm not mistaken on day 3. Since when is any flour containing product acceptable during induction. I dunno about erry1 else, but I'm going to continue on with 2005 DANDR. Yeah, no holding my breath here either

            Money.

What makes more money? A book that costs $7.50 and can be read over and over again or a food product for $7.50 that once eaten is replaced with more? The food product, of course.

Here's an article from 2003, which is strangely prophetic.

            http://www.inc.com/magazine/20031201/spotlight.html

Look at the lame excuse the CEO's gave for closing the medical clinic:
Kabak says that the clinic closed precisely because Dr. Atkins played a central role in it.
Ummm....yeah right. The Mayo brothers played a central role in their clinic, yet they've been dead for over 50 years and their clinic is still going strong. Same thing for the Meninger Clinic.

What the CEO's did was to dump the parts of the business that were either money-losers or potential money losers.

Greed is why. It's sad, but most likely, "lack of interest in low carb diets" is only part of the problem. So many corporations are mismanaged. I personally won't miss any of the Atkin's Products. It doesn't change anything for me.

President and CEO Mark S. Rodriguez said the company has in the past year “adjusted our organization to accommodate a smaller business” and will promote its brands “more broadly for consumers who are concerned about heath and wellness.”

After it leaves bankruptcy, the Ronkonkoma, N.Y.-based company will focus on its nutrition bars and shakes, Rodriguez said in a statement.

                That says it all.
They are not concerned with health - just money.
Focus on the nutrition, not the bars and shakes.
That's the reason for the bankruptcy - anyone who wants to do low carb for a lifetime will tire (or not even try to consume any quantity) of bars and shakes.
