Re: Registered kids for school.... broke now!!!

I guess it is a little different Barbie, thing is, nobody's taxes are helping me pay to raise my dog. That plus its a little irritating when I have a huge chunk of $ taken out of my pay every month that goes toward other peoples children's education and then they think of it as "free" education. And all I hear is constant complaints that more money needs to be budgeted for it because its never enough. Then when they have to contribute a little bit extra for their kid, they complain about that!

But these are just my feelings, of course if you have children you're going to disagree.

No, I see your point Mog. But the education of our nation's children is so very important to the future of our entire country. The sad thing is how far we are behind others in education. I've had kids in private school and paid my taxes as well as tuition. The vouchers in Florida are for those with kids in Failing schools to be able to remove the kids from that school and enroll them in private schools. To me, that is a misappropriation of public tax dollars. Instead of investing in that failing school, to improve the education, the government is taking more money away from the public school system. Makes no sense to me.
I have 3 more years of dealing with the public school system. I will, however, be paying for it forever as well. I don't see that as much of a waste as some of the other places the tax dollars go.

I know, we are ridiculously far behind, no argument there. Do you think that other countries spend the kind of money our country does per kid on public education? I wonder. I don't think that the solution is to keep pumping more and more money into the system. The solution is making it work with the money they already have, so much of it is wasted.

Wow--I started an argument, and I just got here. Welcome to the boards.

I didn't mean I EXPECTED it to be free, I meant it's BILLED as free. That's how it's presented. I can afford to pay for the things needed for my kids' education, and I don't mind doing so (although the $100 parking sticker seems a bit much, imo); I just feel for the families who *don't* have the means. Taxes are put aside for education and in order for any kid to get ahead, they NEED that education. Therefore, I would prefer there were no additional costs involved. Education is the key to our future.

Oh, and hi, everyone, I'm Karen.

I've known (online) MOG for awhile and I just hear a "discussion" not an argument! lol! The way I see it is I pay taxes for a lot of stuff I may never use or have anything to do with me. What if my husband and I die or don't need Social Security or Medicare? We still have to pay for it. (For the sake of discussion let's pretend SS and Medi remain the same) I may never need to call the firefighters or police but I have to pay for them as well. I pay for roads I never travel on. And my children won't live with us forever and we'll be paying for other people's children then as well. We pay taxes period. The people we elect decide where it goes. That's how I see it anyway.

Yeah, not an argument, not from me anyway. A discussion of differing opinions, yes. It's all good, and HI KAREN!! WELCOME ABOARD!!
By the way, MOG is a Karen too!!
And Bug, you right. Taxes go for a lot of things, in the grand scheme of things it is probably not a whole lot of $$ going from each individual towards the school system. I need to find my tax bill and see what it actually is. I remember thinking once that it was not that much overall.

My kids don't start until Sept 12th! I wonder why such a big difference? They got out in June.

Well, they are out here the end of May. They just changed the schedule last year in order to get the finals in before Christmas break. I guess they are figuring the kids forget everything in those 2 weeks off?
Last year was a real screw up though. Our schools were closed for a month after the hurricanes so breaks were shortened and they ended up going into June anyway!! Here's to a better school year this time!!

I will agree to disagree if you will. Personally I would love to keep all of our tax money and hire private teachers. However if I must pay taxes, and to live in this great country I must, then I would prefer it is to help educate, as opposed to help procreate.

The money you pay into social security is not enough to pay for you to retire, BTW.
It takes a number of the next generation to pay for one retiree..
Probably all 4 of my kids and a few others will have to pay for Gizmo (or any other 1 person) to
                            draw social security!
And social security is going bankrupt because the childbirth rate is lower
these days.. Not to open another can of worms, but the social security, and
public education are things that were thought of to promote "the common good".. I guess it's another issue as to whether they work or not..

btw.. We are a homeschooling family.

Well, if you lived in Florida and your kid went to a public school that received an "F", you would be eligible. It's a bogus plan if you ask me. But thats my opinion.
Do a search, there is a lot of info out there.
                              http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/pros_.../vouchers.html
Edited to correct. It was ruled unconstitutional in Florida. But it is out there.
What the option is now in Florida is to Move your child from an F school to a better performing school within the system. Still moving $$ resources from that failing school, instead of working to improve it.
