  • Man silences car alarm by shooting it 3 times

    Associated Press
    Aug. 10, 2005 06:30 PM

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - A man annoyed by a noisy car alarm fired at least three bullets into a Toyota Camry, silencing the alarm and bringing out police who hauled him away in handcuffs, authorities said.

David Owen Rye, 48, was arrested and booked for investigation of reckless discharge of a firearm and felony vandalism, Sgt. John Adamczyk said. Rye allegedly told officers he grabbed his handgun and went out to put a stop to the car alarm.

The owner of the Camry, a sailor whose ship the USS Theodore Roosevelt just returned from an eight-month cruise, was visiting a friend when he heard the gunfire at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, KCAL-TV reported.

Hmmm.....too bad the sailor didn't hear his car alarm going off before he heard the shots. LOL

Makes you wonder about the guy shooting car alarms though.

The shooter sounds like a fruit loop personally. Good thing it wasn't my husband's car. The shooter would've been carried by 6 instead of tried by 12. Lol!

Sorry the car belonged to a serviceman... BUT... whooo hooo for the guy shooting the car alarm... hope the judge has been kept awake all night many times by some yahoo with his car alarm set to go off if the wind blows and on ear shattering high, while they are either dead to the world or far far away so it just goes off all night. Think it is perfectly reasonable to shut them up by any means necesary. IF you set a car alarm, respond to it. If you arent goign to go out there and see what is wrong with your car, dont bother to set the alarm.

I was rooting for the shooter too! I can't tell you how many times I have had to listen to some idiots car alarm go off for hours --what's the point of having an alarm if you're not going to hear the darned thing when it goes off?

Why didn't the shooter just try to find the owner of the car? I'd be tempted to blast it too but I would at least try to find the owner instead of going to jail. I don't like jail...I try to avoid it. just kidding...I've never been in jail except on a field trip...and the one time they were going to take me in I talked my way out of it.

My understanding is not necessarily that the owner of the car would hear the alarm and react, but that the car alarm is designed to attract attention of anyone who is nearby the vehicle if it is being broken into, or damaged. The last thing a criminal wants is a siren letting the whole world know they are comitting a crime. Of course, like most things, it does not work perfectly all the time.

Hmm, well, if the guy can't hear his car alarm going off and everybody else in the neighborhood can, chances are, he's either not around, or he's deaf!

My parents neighbor went on vacation and while they were gone their car alarm went off, the police were called and refused to break into the car to shut it off. So, the alarm went off for hours, all night long, until the darned car battery finally died. I'm actually surprised that someone didn't shoot the owner of the car when he finally got home from vacation, and IMO that would be justifiable homicide!

Heck, a theif's not gonna care about the noise its making, everybody just ignores the darned thing anyway, and by the time the owner shows up, he can break in disable the alarm and be off with the car!

Re: Man silences car alarm by shooting it 3 times

Maybe he parked too far away to hear it. During the day I probably wouldn't hear my alarm go off. I live in a tri-plex and I'm the furthest away from where we park our cars. But my neighbors know which car is mine and they'd just come tell me.

That would be extremely aggravating to hear an alarm go off all night. I can see the temptation! I'm surprised car alarms don't have a cut off time. Like only honk or whatever for 5 mins or something.

Now what a brilliant idea--too bad the alarm designers didn't think of that! LOL

We have an apartment complex that is filled with mostly Mexican immigrants right behind our house. Seems like every weekend one of them gets a new alarm. We have to listen to them demonstrating it for all their friends (and the neighborhood) to hear. They go through all the different alarm sounds it makes at least a dozen times. What a joy that is to listen to!

Lol! There's some noodle around here who doesn't seem to understand their alarm because it goes off constantly. Thankfully for never more than a few minutes but it's every single day! You'd think he/she would've figured it out by now!

Working for the Highway Patrol, we actually get calls of cars being driven down the road WITH THE ALARM GOING OFF... so much for a deterrent
