Just to throw a question out there to those who are big on natural remedies/vitamin/mineral cures..

My son who is 6 will be attending school this fall. We have homeschooled in the past, so this was never an issue, but now he will have to sit in a class, focus on the teacher, and pay attention to his work.

There is the chance that he has Asperbergers, or mild autism, a chance that it is ADD, or it could be from birth trauma... everyone thinks something different..
I wonder if it isnt just him being all boy, and not too interested in some old lady (to him - she is about 35), who just wants to talk all the time. (His take on Sunday School).

I dont want him tested until I see how he does in school without the auto label, and even then, problly wont let them medicate him, he DOES learn, quickly, he just goes about it in a much more social way. .

BUT, the lady at GNC noticed him, and suggested magnesium supplements when we got to talking.

Do we know anything about this?

I'd head straight for a copy of Dr. Atkins Vita Nutrient Solution. It's an amazing resource.

I'm not a huge fan of GNC employees either..for what it's worth. Never met more uneducated know-it-alls in my life. I refuse to shop there anymore.

For my daughter - who is also labled with pervasive development disorder (dead center on the autism/aspbergers syndrome scale), we started her on B vitamins to help her.

I can't say I've noticed any big differences, but they've certainly not hurt her. Her developmental pediatrician and endocrinologist both thought additional supplements for her were a great idea. - They never said anything about magnesium though, and I don't remember magnesium being something that lept off the page of VitaNutrient Solution either.

But then, it's been about 3 years since I read it and it would probably do me good for several reasons to dig it back out.

Womanpraised, there is a book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing. I HIGHLY recommend it. I agree with Brook. People at GNC don't know much, and they don't sell high quality products. Check amazon.com, or your library for the book.

              BUMP'in this thread!

By all means...I don't want to come off as a know it all...because I'm NOT!

BUT....there is alot of information about children and supplementation. I have my son, Chase, on Mag and Taurine for help with his pervasive hypersensitivity disorder, ADD and Tourettes....it helps a little...if for nothing more than replacing the nutrients that he is naturally missing!

Do the research for yourself....and try it! For some it helps...some it doesn't. But, isn't that the way with anything natural? It's wont hurt, especially if you want to avoid the sometimes helpful path of medication...just be prepared to give it at least 6 weeks before you say it isn't working because natual remedies take some time to get in the system. My son takes Seroquel for rage attacks that come hand in hand with tourettes and he takes Tenex which has cut his tics 95%! It is an amazing medication for us! For HIM! We tried to take him off the seroquel before, but he ended up throwing his desk at his teacher...and we don't want that!

(Yes Brook, I have heard that B helps as well!)

              Here is a link.....

Good luck with the school system...if there is something there and it is a decent school district...they'll help him anyway they can.

oh.. and I was glad to see something positive about meds... glad you found that... and strangely enough.. TENEX was the one that worked for the guy I know...

I've teach... kids with behavior disorders... 9 years in the psychoed system in Georgia..

had a student who was BRIGHT!!! but mom had home school him until high school.....

at that point, he was getting in trouble mostly because of his lack of social skills and age inappropriate behavior... (you don't want to know)

Finally mom agreed to give meds a shot... (and so did he)... because as smart as he was... he couldn't focus on an assignment to finish it... he constantly was getting his *** kicked for remarks he'd make to people... then he'd threaten to blow up the school or something.. which was getting him in some serious legal trouble at his age...(10th grade still having tantrums, both verbal and physical like a 3 year old)

moral of this story is..... last time he came to visit us.. he was a student at a junior college on his way to the state university....

he says he wishes he'd been on meds sooner

                    Re: magnesium and kiddos

His neurologist...thinks nothing....but, she says that they can't hurt in moderation! The natural supps dose he is on now is part of a GOOD multi vitamin as it didn't do anything more than that would and it's cheaper to buy the multi vitamins. Plus, I don't want him having to swallow any more pills than he already has too!

We are once again trying to eliminate one of the seroquel doses....he takes 100mg three times a day. But THIS time we are taking it really slow and watching each reduction of 25mg...we shall see how it goes!

Right now he is at 75mg/75mg/100mg with no changes in his behavior. I truly believe its the tenex that's helping him the most, as it was just added in May. What a wonderfull little pill! He was diagnosed with Tourettes at 4!!!!

Not the TV version of Tourette's mind you....the REAL tourettes! Anyone with some true knowledge of it, will know what I mean! Right Peytonn? Nothing worse then hearing from someone....oh gosh, that must be hard to have him swear all the time! Grumble.....

I don't know much about the meds but as far as having your child tested...

I have a friend in the same boat - she had her son tested and mild autism was the diagnosis. What was so amazing is that he had responded to his aid so well and now being in 7th grade is without help. He is a very bright, wonderful and socially skilled young man. In my opinion a child that is labelled with a learning disability is not what every parent wants but without help he may be labeled something a lot worse.
On another note - not every school in our worl has great aids or even the funds available for individual help - so for that I believe he is extremely lucky!!!!

it's so much better to check it out early.... the guy that I was talking about suffered MOST of the consequences as a result of lack of social skills... especially with peers....
that could have been avoided or greatly curtailed with early intervention and training.....

as for Tourettes...... most of the students I've had have mostly the tics..... movements, sounds that aren't really words..... (grunts, yells, squeals etc.).... but this one little guy... a little doll...... but you should see the heads turn when he'd drop the f bomb in the middle of the pledge of allegience or the alama mater or something.....

(again.... it wasn't the adults... but the peers who don't understand.... and it was a touchy situation.... he was in all regular classes... my science classes in 7th and 8th grade)

(oh... I was a reg. ed. science teacher for 16 years, my M.Ed. in Science Ed. then my second life was Special Ed. My Ed.S. is in Behavior Disorders)

Yes....Most of Chase's tics are throat clearing, blinking, yawning, face stretching...but with Tenex....barely noticable any more! THANK GOD!

I think the tics are harder on me then him!

And then there are the comorbid issues...such as rage attacks...ADHD...and the what not...again thanks to tenex it rarely happens any more! WOHOOOOOOOOOO!

as far as Coprolalia goes (swearing) it is such a TV version of Tourettes and SOOOOO very rare! That poor kid!
