  • Sore heels...

I have been walking 3 miles a day outside and when I am done, my heels are killing me. My left one was even burning. I have to take motrin as soon as I get home to help ease the pain. I wear a heel inserts and I have very comfortable walking shoes(sketchers). I know being heavy doesn't help and I probably have plantar fasciitis but, they really hurt. I have seen those new shoes by nike that are suppose to have those spring board inserts into the heels, but they are expensive and I don't want to fork out the money if they don't help. If anyone has these shoes or has advice, please respond.
    Thanks
    Michele

Seeing a doctor comes to mind. And taking it easy on the walking as long as you have not found out what causes the pain. If its really plantar fasciitis you should get treatment.

      See: http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/987116429.html

      quote
Symptoms usually resolve more quickly when the time between the onset of symptoms and the beginning of treatment is as short as possible. If treatment is delayed, the complete resolution of symptoms may take 6-18 months or more. Treatment will typically begin by correcting training errors, which usually requires some degree of rest, the use of ice after activities, and an evaluation of the patient’s shoes and activities. For pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) may be recommended.

Thanks...that was a helpful article. I have been to the doctor and he wanted to do steroid injection into each heel. I didn't want that because steroids raise blood sugar levels a lot. I have been using ibuprofen and that does help.

You might also want to do some stretching exercises after you've walked, while your muscles are still warmed up and loose.

Calf stretches are great for this.. I've had it almost a year. The pain has been a lot better the last 6 months.
I also cut out some exercises..

            check this site too: http://www.heelspurs.com

                Quick note:

This condition is quite common among racquetball players and part of the solution is wearing the double thick bottomed socks. They help more than you might initially think....

I did buy the orthotics and a heel wrap to see if it helps. I will let you all know. Thanks

                    Re: Sore heels...

I didn't buy any of their products, actually.. It just seemed like there was a lot of good advice on
that site. I have put some inserts in shoes that didn't have them that I bought at the drug store..
The calf stretching is really a good thing.. I had to cut out cross training too, and I think that
has helped. I swim now, and even that seems to feel good!

All good advice here, may I also suggest a different walking shoe? I sell shoes for a living and the shoe brand you mentioned is not one I recommend for walking, doesn't mean it's not a good brand at all, and if it works for you, that's fine. Look for a light walking shoe (think air), most have removeable insoles now, and you can put your own in.

Thanks Elsa....I appreciate that. What do you think about those Nike spring board shoes? I really need some help here. Even with the orthotic inserts from walmart my shins burned and my heels and ankles hurt. I strech real well before and after.

I think you should actually see a specialty store for the shoes. Most 'running' chain stores also specialize in walking. they will properly fit you for shoes. i believe proper shoes are your best investment when taking on running or walking. HTH.

Edited to add: also you may want to consider seeing a podiatrist? these problems actually sound chronic and i think you should get professional help rather than relying on any orthotics you pick out yourself. IMO.
