    Re: Missing - Alicia Ross

I sincerely hope there is a happy ending to this story.

I was really angered today by the Toronto Sun . They wasted the first 11 pages of todays edition was all about Karla Homolka's new life in Quebec, and Alicia's disappearance was bumped down to page 16. Even CTV news had the Karla story first. I was left speachless by this.

..for anyone not canadian/or living in Ontario, Karla Homolka was convicted, along with her husband, of the rape/murder/torture of 2 teenage girls, and the rape and accidental drugging death of her own teeneage sister, and the druggin and rape of her sisters friend. she only recieved 12 yrs in a plea bargain and has been released recently.

It's disgusting that the disappearance of Alicia Ross would be bumped by pictures and stories of this poor excuse for a human. Alicia's disapearance is far more important news right now IMO.

sorry just finished reading the paper and was so angry and saw this post had to vent.

I was appalled by that too. I couldn't believe that that woman is getting so much exposure. grrrr... there are so many things I could say right now... but none of them are very nice.

I couldn't find more current numbers, but this gives you an idea of how many people go missing in the U.S. alone in a years time, unbelievable. Most of them you never even hear about. But here it seems, the only ones we ever hear about are the ones that come from the wealthy white families. Is Canada like that too?

As of March 31, 2003 there were 97,297 active missing person cases in the United States. Of those missing, approximately 54,184 are juveniles and nearly 43,113 were reports of individuals eighteen and older.

In 2001, 840,279 missing persons (adults and children) were reported to the police and entered into the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC). This represents the smallest number of missing persons reports since 1992 (801,358 ).

The FBI estimates that 85-90% of missing persons are juveniles. In approximately 725,000 cases (or 2,000 per day) the disappearance of a child/adult was serious enough that
a parent called the police, the police took a report and
entered the report into the NCIC.

The 2001 missing persons reports were down 4.1% from 2000. The total increase since the passage of the Missing Children's Act in 1982 is 444% (154,341 in 1982 vs. 840,279 in 2001).

Wow those numbers are staggering. I looked for canda's statistics but didn't see them...

No we don't have the problem with the reports i don't think...I think the police usually know when it's an 'unusual' case, someone that wouldn't take off on their own. Once in a while the local news will even report runaways if they're young..asking for anyone who knows their whereabouts etc. They don't normally report parental custody abductions, i think they account of a lot of the missing kids...

I know that in the US the race and class distinctions are very different than they are here (we do have them...but it's not nearly as bad). that's a shame, every missing child, or person should be treated exactly the same..and reporting them on tv, and having amber alerts etc can make such a huge difference.

the update: they have not found alica, or any evidence but they think she knew her abductor

We had a 15 year old who was taken a couple of days ago by a convicted sex offender. He was only out of prison for 3 days and has already struck again. Why do they let these guys out of jail?

exactly..i don't think they can be rehabilitated. I think that may even be proven. It' should be mandatory Life in prison, their WHOLE life..no parole, no good behaviour etc. That woman i mentioned earlier, karla homolka, she's responsible for the death of 3 girls, one her sister...and she walked out in 12 yrs! full sentence too. she cooperated with the gov't so they plea bargained and she tried to pin it on hubby...but then they found video tapes him and her had hidden (her lawyer knew about them and was disbarred for not revealing)..and she was just as big a participant as him. but because she plea bargained...and she has rights they would not reverse it.

I think this is a perfect example of how the law can terribly wrong, and i know this happens on both sides of the border..

we have a convicted released pedophile living on our street..someone has gone around and posted his picture/address on all the telephone poles so we all know what he looks like. that's the only defense we have, i'm sure people are terrified to let their kids play outside

Wow, scary stuff. Both stories. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the missing girl. Hope they find a good lead soon!!

As for the other lady, just disgusting. Yes, I would say the legal system failed those teens and their families. I work in the law field and I am so in favor of harsher punishments. Agreed, sex offenders should not be released. The percentage rate is something like 98% of sex offenders will repeat their offense once released. (That number may not be entirely accurate, pulling from memory, but it was an astonishing number).

This whole thing with Alicia Ross is so terrible. It seems that its a very small world - she's the daughter of a law clerk at the firm a friend of mine works at. Everyone at the firm is pulling together to help get the flyer out to as many people as possible.

I was surprised they weren't considering it suspicious sooner. Who leaves their car, wallet, id, phone, etc at home, and just leaves? Wouldn't that have made it obvious from the get-go?

                      Terrible.
