I am also leaning toward Regulus Black being RAB also. We don't know much about him at all. We do know that RAB had powers greater than Dumbledorf because Dumbledorf needed Harry's help to obtain the horcrux, while RAB did it alone, at least we think he did.
I agree that Snape is a good guy and still in the order but I am not sure the reason why Dumbledorf had to be killed. Possibly because that would prove Snapes loyality to the Deatheaters, but then he is not taking credit for killing him.
1) Was the problem with Dumbledorfs hand every reveled and what happened to him to get it in that shape? Is it possible that he was dying anyway?
2) Did Snape know that Harry was in the room, remember he was hiding.
3) I like the "love of Lily" idea but I don't think so....It wasn't Snape who told where the Potters were or helped kill them.

Guess I need to go back and read them again, for the third time. LOL

I've read the book 3 times already! Lol! In Chamber of Secrets Dumbledore already told Harry he's not related to Voldemort remember? Dumbledore said that some of V's powers got transferred to Harry. Unless they're like twice cousins three times removed and do a backbend. According to OOP all the wizarding families are supposed to be related somehow but from HBP it seems that particular family line of Syltherin was the last. I wonder if V had another brother or sister we don't know yet? Except I think it being a character we already know is more likely. I think Snape did know Harry was in the room because of Occul-thingy. I'm having a hard time believing Snape really did join the Dark side. I sure wish I knew why Dumbledore trusted him so much.

We think Dumbledore was already dying. His hand was not getting better (and no, it was never explained). If he was already dying, he wouldn't have wanted Malfoy to kill him, thus making it impossible for Malfoy to ever go to the good side or have a chance at a good life. And so, it fell to Snape.

By the way, Dumbledore can still communicate with Harry. He is in a portrait in the headmaster's office.............

Hard for me to believe Regulus was more powerful than Dumbledore......but you have a point, there.

Snape didn't turn in Lily and Harry. But Snape overheard the prophecy and told Voldemort, who figured out it was Harry, so Snape feels responsible.........or that's the theory......

Finelly-- I never thought about Dumbledore's hand! He did never reveal what happened, did he? I thought he might be dying partially because of what he drank to fish the locket out...

The interesting thing about Snape and who told Volde about Harry is interesting. There were two babies who could have fit the prophecy: Harry and Neville. Dumbledore tells Harry that Volde choose him (Harry) a half blood like himself as his equal rather than a pure blood like Neville. If you use this timeline from the HP Lexicon

Snape is working at Hogwarts by August 1981, at least a year after Trelawney's prophecy which he partially overhead at the pub. Within months, the Potters are dead. Rowling once said in an interview that whenever a magical child is born, McGonagal puts that child's name in a book at Hogwarts and when that child comes of school age, the owls are sent with an admissions notice. So whoever had access to that book at Hogwarts would have been in a terrific position to tell Voldemort about the July babies: Harry and Neville.

I thought (and I'm going to have to re-read that section to find the exact wording) that Dumbledore's hand was damaged when he was destroying the ring horcrux. He said that the ring had a powerful curse, and that when he destroyed it, Snape's skills helped get rid of the curse, leaving him with the blackened hand...

Check your book, please! (I only have three copies and they are all hiding from me, lol) I, too, cannot remember exactly what the deal is with the hand.

But I do think it came when the ring was taken, and I don't remember if Snape helped fix it, but it definately wasn't healed, and perhaps that weakened Dumbledore enough to cause him to be more vulnerable re: the locket. OR, perhaps it caused a slow and inevitable weakening and Dumbledore was dying.......

JKRowling at one point said she wasn't sure Harry was going to survive the last book. That's a scary thought, given that there are a number of horcruxes to be located and destroyed, and of course, the inevitable battle with He Who Must Not Be Named.

Some idle questions that come up in our household:

1. Will Neville get to kill Bella in revenge for the injury to his parents?

2. Will Neville and Luna get together?

3. Will Viktor Krum reappear and have a role in the last book?

4. What's the deal with introducing a Muggle Prime Minister? He never appeared again in the book - will the muggle govt have some part in the last book?

5. Is Percy Weasley going to get a spanking (literally or figuratively) and pull himself together to become a decent wizard-type person? Can I watch and maybe administer a couple of slaps to his snerty face?

JoAnne, I was looking at the Lexicon and I noticed that there is a Rabastian LeStrange. I recall in one of the earlier books, when Voldemort fell, all his followers began scrambling to hide or destroy things of his (evidence). Perhaps this horcrux wasn't stolen out of malice but relocated out of fear the Ministry would find it?

Okay...regarding the withered hand, here is the explanation from the book:

And now I forget why we wanted the exact wordiing on that. lol

I HOPE that Luna and Neville will wind up together...they certainly made a good pair and deserve happiness. As for Neville getting rid of Bella, I do think that Neville will rise up and accomplish something huge, and that I wouldn't be surprised if it involved Bella.

The note that RAB left in the fake horcrux does sound pretty malicious. I do wonder, though....how did RAB get it when it took both Dumbledore and Harry to get it? If he had help, who was the helper? It could be that Kreacher was the helper...just a thought.

Do you think that Rabastian LeStrange could be the RAB???

If it is Rab, then it is probably LeStrange. But if it is RAB, then I'm still going with Sirius' brother. Sirius told Harry that his brother repented of going to the dark side right before he was killed.........

So......what will be the setting of the last book, if Harry isn't going to return to Hogwarts? Do you think that at the very least the climax will take place at Hogwarts with all of Dumbledore's army helping out?

It's not really going to be the very last book is it???? I think we'll see Harry hunting down Voldemort. The final confrontation at Hogwarts would be awesome, or at the spot where Harry's parents were killed. I think Neville has got some kick a$$ potential in him too and I'm really looking forward to see what he does. I'm also fascinated by the romance between Hermoine and Ron! That's going to be fun to watch!
