    Re: Gas price thread

$1.20 a litre here in Ottawa today too.

But on a more positive note, when the gas prices go up, the Canadian dollar gets stronger.

      Re: Gas price thread

I've always wondered how they can raise the gas prices overnight like that anyway. The gas at the pump has already been paid for by the gas station and they got it at a lower price, how is it that they are allowed to raise the price at a moments notice? Should they be prevented from raising it more than a certain percentage above what they actually purchased the gas for?

I heard on the news this a.m. that since canada is an oil producing country, the hurricane effect should not have risen our gas prices so drastically,
Out of curiousity how much of that oil does Canada keep and how much does it export? Here in Oregon (where I'm at) our prices are climbing but slowly...following the trend before the hurricane. Although, I'm not sure where our gasoline comes from so that may change.

DH gets excited, too. And then also marvels at how terrible that is.

I heard on the news this a.m. that since canada is an oil producing country, the hurricane effect should not have risen our gas prices so drastically, but the gov't will not investigate and insists there is no 'price gauging'. they're just laughing all the way to the bank with the tax $$ they take in.
That's what I heard, too - that the rise in price has nothing to do with the hurricane, just gas companies taking advantage.

I'm hoping it will finally reach a point where people say enough is enough, and things like hybrid cars, or other alternatives, become more of a reality. [Or in the case of hybrid cars, are more available!] Because obviously this is just not sustainable.

We own tri-axle & quad-axle dump trucks. We're dropping just about $200 a DAY per TRUCK in deisel right now. This morning it was $2.839 a gallon.

There is talk of the truckers shutting their rigs down over the gas prices. The gas prices are killing us and it's ridiculous.

No trucks= no road work=no food deliveries=no nothing.

The owner-operators will but the big name companies like Schneider and J.B Hunt will keep going and just pass the cost to the companies they haul for. I feel badly for owner-operators...I don't see how they'll be able to keep going with these prices.

i can't believe i actually found a realy good answer to this:

Canada’s total oil production (including all liquids) was 3.1 million barrels per day (bbl/d) in 2004, making it the seventh-largest oil producer in the world. Canada was also the seventh-largest world oil consumer in 2004 at 2.3 million bbl/d.

Canada sends over 99% of its crude oil exports to the U.S., and the country is one of the most important sources of U.S. oil imports. During the first eleven months of 2004, Canada exported 1.62 million bbl/d of crude oil to the U.S., the single-largest component of U.S. crude oil imports.

The largest share of U.S.-bound Canadian oil exports (65%) go to the Midwest , with smaller amounts heading to the Rocky Mountains and the East Coast.

                    from: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/canada.html

Who knew oil could be so interesting??? before i had a car i could have cared less. though it makes not mention of how much we keep, though i'd think we'd keep enough to keep the prices down.

I'm with MOG, I can't understand how the prices can jump overnight. on the 2 hour drive up to our cottage, it always amazes me that once i leave toronto there is sucha drastic (higher) price of gas. the reason being of course is you're out in the country so they've got you. no competetion, you have no choice but to buy your gas there. you're stuck if the next station is 50kms away.

I was going to whine about the gas going up in 1 hour from $2.79 to $2.99 just a little while ago!

I'll just be thankful there's gas.

                          Re: Gas price thread

Sadie...that was a great article. I read the rest of it and am confused how this hurricane affects Canada's oil. Except I did see this:

Oil Exports to the United States (Jan. - Nov. 2004E): 2.1 million bbl/d, of which 1.6 million bbl/d was crude oil
Oil Imports from the United States (Jan. - Nov. 2004): 155,000 bbl/d, of which 24,000 bbl/d was crude oil

But if Canada exports a heck of a lot more than they import the price jump at Canadian gas pumps doesn't make sense to me. I think the oil companies just take any excuse they can really. Or there is just more to this than I understand. You're right...who knew it could be so interesting!

Don't mean to be an alarmist here, but things here (Georgia) have already started going downhill fast regarding gas. My son was south of Atl. and had a hard time finding gas. Where he was able to get it, was only allowed to get 10 gallons. My daughter just called me from her neighborhood gas station, where cars were parked 20 deep waiting to get gas. My sister just called and her gas station is OUT! Everybody take care, and PRAY for this country.

i paid $2.55 a gal yesterday..it was $48 to fill up...and i wasn't even on empty. i had 1/4 of a tank left. i remember back in february when i got my truck....i thought it was horrible to top the tank off at $30. i've got to buy gas tomorrow already (i had to drive 210 miles yesterday instead of my normal daily 60 miles)....and i'm SO dreading it. all of my paycheck is going for gas to get to work! seems pointless, no?
