I don't agree. Our local Red Cross chapter is doing a tremendous job.

Good, I'm glad they are working well in Mississippi. It obviously isn't as good in New Orleans.

You only have the information that is being fed to us on the news media, remember they all, and I mean all, have an agenda.

We don't see what is going on in the smaller communities outside of New Orleans. More places in La. were hit besides NO.

Re: something about the REd Cross ads..

When I saw this thread I became a little annoyed. However, I do understand the thoughts that are crossing your minds regarding the proper use of donated funds. I don't actually have any money to give, nor do I have supplies to donate. I do however have my time, arms, legs, hands, feet, and ears (sometimes it's best just to be a listener). I sat through Red Cross Volunteer training last night and will spend tonight working the front desk at our shelter. I will be happy to give an account of my night and tell you how I honestly feel regarding the use of funds and supplies given to our local Red Cross chapter. If you don't live close to the affected area and don't feel comfortable sending money, try contacting your local chapter and viewing the training videos, it could change your mind about donating money and it will definitely make you available should a disaster occur in your neck of the woods.

Re: something about the REd Cross ads..

You're right. We can all volunteer some time. We can donate blood and plasma. We can find other organizations to give to if the Red Cross is not our style. And we SHOULD. Dislike of one organization should never impede our giving to others!

I'm watching coverage of other small towns in Louisiana, by the way. I'm not seeing a lot of Red Cross activity. I hope I'm wrong. But FEMA and the RC appear to have been really slow in doing much of anything at all. It's the communities outside of the affected areas that are pulling together to take in people and provide all of the necessities. I'm sure the Red Crosses in those communities are doing well - but the fact remains that they needed to get in to the flooded areas a long time ago!

I'm not really cut out for Natl Guard or anything...but now I'm thinking about taking the RC training. I've always felt that if the "Big One" hit on the West Coast that I would definely volunteer for that.
It would be best if I was on the "list."

Even if I wanted to volunteer for Katrina it would take me 4 days to get down there

Does anybody know how much of every dollar actually is used directly for the victims and how much goes into all those ads on TV and the such?

Re: something about the REd Cross ads..

I just remember there was a HUGE backlash after 9-11... and it was a tiny percentage that actually went to victims...

yes the light bill has to be paid.... and paper and computers bought etc. etc.

but does anyone have an idea about the salaries the execs make?

the 18 wheeler is pulling out this week with our stuff....

there's 500 people already here at the Georgia Baptist Assembly thing... with kids enrolled in school and school supplies ready.. etc. etc...

I guess the small efforts will eventually add up

Re: something about the REd Cross ads..

ok, well I worked a 10-6 shift on Saturday night, their first night, and again last night from 8-10. I can't really form an opinion on if money is used appropriately, right now everything tangible looks donated. But I do know that giving is worth it, I mean time at least. Some of the services being provided right now are things like computers for clients to register on the Red Cross list and locate relatives. I've heard a few sad stories. But, everyone (95% of the clients) are so thankful that it is definitely worth the time and lack of sleep. In fact, I'm so sleepy right now, that I don't feel like I'm making too much sense. So, here's my suggestion:

                        1. Volunteer your time (anywhere you are, do something)
                        2. Give to a charity of your choosing. Even if you don't give to the Red Cross, help someone.

I'll try to update this with a better account of my experience, but I need to get back to work.

Re: something about the REd Cross ads..

I have to say that I was actually impressed with an ad I saw for the Red Cross today. After all the crap that happened in San Diego it's nice to see that the Red Cross is now telling people to put down where they want the money to go.

Pretty much any organization you donate to will only give a percentage to disaster relief. They all have bills to pay, employees to pay, etc. so no matter where you donate you can't expect 100% of your money to go toward the relief.
Female/32/Still too big, but getting smaller..

                            Instant insanity!

nope... but does n obody remember after 9-11... when it was only like a fourth that went to disaster relief?

yeah yeah yeah there's bills to pay... who says these execs have to earn 6 figure salaries?

Yes, they all only give a percentage of the money to the victims, but it can vary greatly from one organization to another. Some give a couple of pennies on the dollar and some much more. I'm just curious as to how much of every dollar donated actually goes to help victims and not to salaries and expense accounts. I'm not dissing the Red Cross, I would truly like to know this information.
