    Re: Katrina-New Orleans

Also please note this quote from the letter I posted above
Think about it. On Saturday, two days before the storm, The Director of the Hurricane Center called Mayer Nagin and Gov.. Blanco pleading with them to evacuate. Nothing. The President personally called and strongly urged Mayor Nagin and Gov. Blanco to order evacuations. Finally, on Sunday, less than one day before the storm hit, evacuations were called for.

What is your source? Here is a letter where Gov. Blanco requests aid from the President, before the hurricane:

I'm assuming you got that information from Free Republic, which is the equivalent of looking for unbiased information about Christianity on a Radical Muslim website.

Peytonn, I agree with you in part. But many of these people didn't have a means of transportation and their local and state government KNEW IT! So how were those people to leave if they didn't have the means to leave? The local and state government should have provided their means of transportation but they didn't.

The link Democat supplies to Blanco's letter doesn't ennumerate any request that the Federal government help in evacuating the poor and indigent from NO or any other low lying areas in Louisiana before Katrina. It asks for post-Katrina funding.

So don't rely on the government. I hope the next time something like this occurs, people will know better than to wait around while the bureacrats in city hall, the state capital and DC twiddle their thumbs making life or death decisions.

Look at this article from the Times-Picayune dated August 28, 2005
          http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/frontpa...3007249320.xml

On Saturday at 7 p.m., the Hurricane Center placed the storm 360 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, with winds of 115 mph. The forecast projected the storm sweeping directly over the city.

The Hurricane Center posted a hurricane warning from Morgan City to the Alabmama-Florida line.

President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, authorizing federal emergency management officials to release federal aid and coordinate disaster relief efforts.

By mid-afternoon, officials in Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, Lafourche, Terrebonne and Jefferson parishes had called for voluntary or mandatory evacuations.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin followed at 5 p.m., issuing a voluntary evacuation.

Nagin said late Saturday that he's having his legal staff look into whether he can order a mandatory evacuation of the city, a step he's been hesitant to do because of potential liability on the part of the city for closing hotels and other businesses.
So Nagin doesn't order a mandatory evacuation, in spite of the fact that a category 3 or 4 hurricane is coming right at them because the hotels and businesses in NO might lose revenue and sue the city government???? That's irresponsible and anyone who defends the actions of that incompetent Mayor isn't looking at this situation objectively.

I'm also talking about the 100's of people stranded in apartments that DID have to way to at least get to the dome... no that wasn't the greatest alternative.... but they at least wouldn't still be stuck in an attic or something......

I'm not talking people who don't even own a car...

I guess over the years I've just gotten a bad attitude about government assistance etc.. and the loopholes...

I teach ... and do you know how many kids eat free lunch and carry Razor cellphones?

I guess I'm just sick of people expecting somebody else to do the thinking for them.... providing everything in the world...

yesterday.... at the lake cabin... we had grilled chicken legs, hamburger and hotdogs....great meal! no doubt.....

but I got that same old "DAMN" feeling again when a gal in front of me at the grocery store paid for $200 of rib-eyes with her food stamps..... then paid cash for the beer

                Re: Katrina-New Orleans

Ahh...people with their own transportation are in a different category than the people who don't have their own transportation. And in that case, those people, with the means to get out but made a decision to stay, have to accept the risks and benefits of their decision.

Here's the City of New Orleans Emergency Preparedness plan for hurricanes. Reading through it and seeing how Nagin and Blanco reacted it's easy to see why they're in the mess they're in.

Yeah, but for all you know a crack addict could have sold her those food stamps for a fraction of the cost. It happens all the time here. A crack mother with 6 children sells her food stamps and leaves the children at home alone for days while she's out getting high. It comes around to the end of the month and their food is low. So then she hits all of the food pantries for more freebies. And what can we do but work harder and pay those taxes because, afterall, those babies that she's squirting out need to eat.

again... that makes it part of the problem.. about personal responsibility.....

(personally I think food stamps should require picture ID to use... just like a credit card or something... and I think more restrictions should be on what can be bought......... )

can't this outo of my head... the whole selling foodstamps thing... which is why they should go back to doing commodities..... where they hand out a chunk of cheese, a gallon of peanut butter, some macaroni, canned meat... and that's all you get for a month.....

WIC/foodstamps.. a bunch of that stuff is grossly misused.... as well as free lunches....

                          Re: Katrina-New Orleans

I used WIC when hubby was in college. I was also the only one I knew who used manufacturer's coupons to buy cereal (etc) with to help save the state money. The clerks were always shocked that I cared about saving the state money!

We were very thankful for what we had, then, and we never abused those priveleges. It saddens me to think that there are people who abuse the system, but there are people out there-like me- who were thankful for what we were given, and now we give back!

that wonderful.. I'm sure there's many many success stories... but the abuse I've seen is first hand also... for example.... I know a kid who quit a $14 an hour job ... the pregnant wife wanted him home with her..... she still smokes.... and gets WIC and foodstamps and will have the baby in a hospital I'll (and other taxpayers) will be paying for .. when she doesn't have to......

According to their emergency plan the city was to provide food and water for evacuees in the city shelters---didn't happen because the city didn't prepare.

Well, on the bright side, some of the evacuees are being re-located to areas with the appropriate supplies.

I guess we, "Atkins losers", can help out by donating our old clothing to those people. We can also donate some foods stuffs too.
