Oh my God. Today I watched a news conference with the head of Homeland Security. (And yesterday I watched a bunch of the FEMA people do interviews as well.)
And I suddenly realized that what is needed over in the hurricane-ravaged area is a Rudy Guliani. They don't have one. What they DO have are:
- leaders who kvetch about how everything is someone else's fault
- leaders who claim that they had no idea that there were people at the Convention Center despite 24 hour news coverage of them for days
- A Secretary for Homeland Security who is neither reassuring nor appears particularly friendly
We need someone who will be brutally honest with us about the extent of the damage and predicted body count, reassuring about our emotions and those of the victims, coordinated and a good manager of the different relief efforts, and who is willing to appear on television to say what needs to be said and go DIRECTLY to the areas affected, all of them, openly and with compassion and comfort.
Instead, we have a SEcretary of Homeland Security who said in response to a question as to why the Red Cross HASN'T BEEN ALLOWED INTO NEW ORLEANS (!!!!!?????!!!!!) - "it isn't safe for them." EXCUSE ME?
This ardent Democrat wants Rudy to fly out there asap.
