  • Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks

    From correspondents in New Orleans

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?" http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/com...5E1702,00.html

Yes Sean, never leave home to go rescue children without your entourage and personal photographer in tow.

It sounds like he needed some help of his own.

I'm no fan of Sean Penn, but at least he was out there actually attempting to do something, instead of just writing a check. Of course, I'm sure he'll use this as a platform to spread his Anti-Bush propaganda. We all know that Bush created Hurricane Katrina.

He actually was looking for friends that he hadn't heard from, and offered assistance any way he could. Considering it will take weeks or perhaps months to locate every person-dead or alive-in NO, any help should be appreciated.

Bush didn't create hurricane Katrina. However, he did appoint inexperienced political lackeys to the two most important posts in the country that respond to terrorism and disasters: FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security. No need for anti-Bush comments when the actions speak for themselves. I feel so much safer with two gentleman with NO emergency management experience at the helms of the two most important security posts. Yippeee!

          I beg to differ, Democat.

Mr. Brown, the head of FEMA, has greatqualifications. NOBODY could do the job like him. His prior experience, 9 years as the Director of the Arabian Horse Association, makes him uniquely qualified to run a disaster-relief organization, I'm sure.

And Mr. Chertoff, who is known by our family as "the dead bald guy" because he looks like a walking cadaver, is excellent as well. He actually appears to believe what he is saying when he faces the cameras! It really comforts me to know that NOBODY ever predicted that a hurricane would destroy New Orleans. Obviously, all of those experts who keep popping up on tv to contradict him are just partisan hacks.......

So anyway, my point (other than the one on top of my head) is that Brown and Chertoff must stay. Brown because you never know when a disaster involving horses will occur, and Chertoff because he is so darned photogenic.......

Lmao! Did you see Chertoff's press conference where he called NO the 'city of Louisiana?' One would think grasp of geography would be a prerequisite when you're defending the homeland. Here's the link (if you have audio):

Of course, since failure is usually rewarded, *cough* Tenet *cough*, you can expect Brown to be promoted when all is said and done.

            Finelly, you are hilarious!

Hilarious? I'm dead serious. Always. <g>

My dh just pointed out that actually, NOBODY is better than Brown. When we need to call out the cavalry, either literally or figuratively, he knows what that means!

Yes, I just caught the "City of Louisiana" comment. I wonder if he knows how to spell tomatoe? (sic)

                Of course he did.
He's diverting attention away from his debacle in Iraq:
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday that Iraq has become an even greater “center for terrorist activities” than Afghanistan under the Taliban.

                  Sure he was!
I'd like to see a few more movie stars out there in leaky boats myself.
Seriously though, if that's the way he offers assistance, perhaps he should should stay home and write a check.

Okay, I thought I'd seen it all! This is sooo funny! Please show me where I have insisted that the military are the only ones who salute the flag. Where is that post?

You made a post trying to bait me into an argument by attacking the quote in my signature line. I did not respond to you. But, obviouly you ARE responding to me. Didn't you just make the previous post?

BTW, just wondering why you dislike our men and women who are serving their country?

I agree with you Finelly. Look how being a VP for Comcast helped the NO Mayor Ray Nagin deal with Katrina. A category 5 hurricane was approaching his city and he orders an evacuation of the city but leaves behind about 100,000 New Orleans residents who had no means of transportation out of the city because they are below the national poverty level and can't afford to buy or rent a car.

Why? Because someone shows support for them? I'm truly confused here.
