Re: Frustrated with FEMA/Red Cross
I would think one of the airlines would be happy to do so free of charge. That's wonderful that you found her and so nice of your friends to do that!
I've heard that La Quinta hotels aren't worrying right now whether they'll be paid for rooms and such, they're just trying to do what they can to help.
Houston's Restaurants made an open offer to its employees to come to any area and they would be given work, a shopping stipend for clothes and necessities, and would arrange for temporary housing.
They had two restaurants in New Orleans and 40 other restaurants in
LA, San Francisco, Arizona, Denver, Texas, Chicago, Kansas City, Florida, Atlanta, Tennessee, Washington DC, New York, New Jersey and Boston.

Re: Frustrated with FEMA/Red Cross
I think you are kinda out line to ask so much of them....They are working to the bone with thousands of people and you want them to have one family get together?I called FEMA and Red Cross and neither of them will help him get to his mother. Red Cross says they will help locate people but will not help people get together, even children and parents!!
My girlfriend works for a big hotel here in dallas and she is telling me about all the people including the red cross volunteers staying there.
Everyone has alot on their hands right now....They can't just snap their fingers for everyones wish.335/265/230

Re: Frustrated with FEMA/Red Cross
There may or may not be, just not the top priority.I thought the Red Cross or FEMA or the government provided financial support for situations like that? It's not that I think they should "drop everything" for one person, but I just thought that there might be finances available to help situations like this where minor children are separated from their parents due to disaster.335/265/230

Re: Frustrated with FEMA/Red Cross
When children aren't the top priority, there's a problem. Getting that child together with his mother so that she can take care of him is going to cost EVERYONE less money in the short term and long term. It's not just a matter of the humanity issue, but a matter of practicality.
Asking for help for a child is *never* out of line, Kimberly. I think you did an amazing thing in helping that boy when other people/organizations found it to be less than a priority.

Re: Frustrated with FEMA/Red Cross
It amazes me how wonderful everyone is here at ADBB. There are always threads about what we can do to help OTHERS and the response is always overwhelming. I just had to comment, mamakimberly, what you did for that boy is wonderful. You and your friends\family and everyone here who helped are a great bunch.

Re: Frustrated with FEMA/Red Cross
And this is how the story ends:
KATRINA VICTIMS' REUNION---WHILE THOUSANDS OF EVACUEES SEARCH FOR LOVED ONES WHO WERE SEPARATED DURING THE HURRICANE, THERE IS ONE MORE FAMILY THAT'S HAPPY TO BE REUNITED TONIGHT. AS THE WB'S KATIE MCCALL EXPLAINS, IT WAS A LONG 11 DAY WAIT FOR A NEW ORLEANS MOTHER WHO FINALLY FOUND HER SON. ------ LIKE SO MANY EVACUEES IN HOUSTON, NICOLE MONTGOMERY HAS SPENT ALMOST EVERY MOMENT LOOKING FOR HER SON. (("The last time I saw my son was the day before the storm."))
THE LAST THING SHE HEARD WAS THAT 13-YEAR-OLD DARNELL HAD GONE TO RIDE OUT THE HURRICANE WITH A NEIGHBOR IN NEW ORLEANS. SHE HAD NO IDEA KATRINA WOULD RAVAGE THE CITY. (("After the storm hit everything went chaos. Everything went crazy."))
FOR 11 DAYS, IN FOUR DIFFERENT SHELTERS, NICOLE AND HER HUSBAND PATRICK JONES WROTE DARNELL'S NAME ON EVERY LIST THEY COULD FIND; INCLUDING THE RED CROSS FAMILY LINKS REGISTRY. TODAY IT PAID OFF.
A RED CROSS EMPLOYEE IN DALLAS
FOUND DARNELL AND WAS PUTTING HIM ON A PLANE TO HOUSTON. (("I am going to be at the Houston Hobby Airport. I will be there."))
MONTGOMERY FOUND US TODAY BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T HAVE A RIDE. SO WE GAVE HER ONE AND WITH HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS AT THE AIRPORT, ESCORTED HER TO THE GATE FOR THE BIG MOMENT. (("Darnell! Hey boy. You ok?"))
DARNELL DIDN'T SAY MUCH BUT HIS SMILE SAID IT ALL. (("I wanted to see her."))
THE FAMILY WANTS TO REMIND OTHER PARENTS WAITING FOR THEIR REUNIONS NEVER TO GIVE UP. (("I came from a praying family and all we do is pray and pray and I'm glad he's back home."))
KATIE MCCALL, WB 39 NEWS. TAG---THE RED CROSS IS TAKING NAMES FOR ITS FAMILY LINKS REGISTRY. TO FIND IT LOG ONTO OUR WEB SITE AT: HOUSTONSWB.COM.
