GSC Scientists Monitor "Tremor and Slip" Beneath Vancouver Island

An important scientific event is currently underway on the west coast of Canada.

The event is the predicted "tremor and slip event" which is related to
the movement of the Juan de Fuca and North America tectonic plates
along the Cascadia margin of southern British Columbia. The slip event
(monitored by Global Positioning Satellite data) and the associated
tremors that we are currently experiencing, are directly related to
megathrust (Sumatra-like) earthquake potential. Neither the tremor nor the slip can be felt.

The forecast Episodic Tremor and Slip event has now reached southern
Vancouver Island. Tremor activity started at 01:00 on September 03 on
the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State and has migrated north to
the greater Victoria/southernmost Vancouver Island area. Using GPS
observation, Natural Resources Canada scientists have confirmed that
Victoria has moved 3mm to the west in the 2 days since the slip event
    began.
Episodic tremor and slip occurs roughly every 14th months, and
lasts from 6 to 15 days.
By better understanding these events, we will be able to better
predict the effects (and perhaps timing) of future magnitude 9
    earthquakes along the west coast.

Sounds like its pretty standard happening

Well...I live in Victoria...so if you don't hear from me it's because my computer chair has been rattled too far away from my keyboard...lol

We had a really good quake about 4 years ago and I worked on the 5th floor of a recently upgraded department store in the housewares department. We could hear the quake travel the length of the store and after it passed you could literally feel the floor swaying, like you were on a boat. We've had others, much smaller but that was the biggest.

A lot of us were paranoid for a while after that, but you can't live your whole life waiting for the 'big one' to happen, right? We keep food and water tucked away and we always have candles on hand, so what more can you do.

Hopefully the Island will move closer to the mainland so the ferry ride will be shorter or they can finally build that bridge!
