  • ahhh baby food!

I was wondering, to all of those who have started a baby on solid foods..how much did you give them when they started. my dr. doesn't tell me ..uh..anything. When do you move onto 2nd foods, and do i do the 1 jar or fruit, i jar of veggies, and one of meat?? I don't get this. Joey hates eating the cereal too, even when i mix it with the food. Did you guys give your little one cereal...i still try b/c it says i should, but i want to know what real parents did....thanks!

    Hi JSJ!

It's a scary adventure isn't it? My "babies" are 11 and 14, so I only have a dim memory of what I did, but yes, I did give them cereal. It seems to me there was a specific order that you introduced the different kinds, i.e. I think we started with rice and then worked up to corn or wheat. This was to avoid potential food allergies. I think we continued with cereal even after introducing other foods. Did you try mixing some fruit with the cereal? I think that worked.

The same with jarred food. Start with fruits I think, in some kind of order, then veggies, then meats. We based it on how much they wanted to eat at a time. At the beginning it was just a spoonful or two then we moved up to half a jar and then full jars. I don't think we ever gave them a jar each of fruit, veg and meat all at one meal though. By the time they can eat that much I think they are on finger foods.

You should probably be asking the doc more questions (or changing docs? - we had to - the first one we had made us feel like we were too stupid to have kids). Or you could look for books about this. I'm assuming there are some...I used Dr. Spock but I know some people didn't like him. I just wanted info on feeding and rashes and stuff. Anyway, until someone with more recent experience comes along to answer you, I just thought I'd throw in my thoughts. How old is your little one? Good luck!

thanks! My little joey will me 6 months on saturday!! I'm so excited! I have given him fruits or vegies mixed w/ the cereal..but i swear he knows!! He just gives me this look before he spits it out at me...we did introduce the cereals in order and we did the same with the jars, except i did veggies first b/c i didn't want him to go from yummy sweet foods to bland ones. It seemed to work good. He tried the chicken, but he made the worst face ever..i just gave him little bit of turkey instead, and the face was a little better...not much though. I got a shot of him making this god-aweful face, but i don't know how to post it. Well, thanks so much for replying.

        Cereal.
        Then cereal mixed with applesauce
        Then apples
        then bananas
        Then carrots
        Then other fruits

Mine never really appreciated the other veggies or the meat. I think that after carrots and other fruits I started them on finger foods. Soft things like peas that they could pick up and swallow. Cheerios. That sort of thing.
