  • Redcross Turned Down Donations

I thought this was something to post.

My dad works for First Energy here in Ohio and he was asked to drive his semi down to Alabama and drop off all the supplies\donations\etc that Ohio has recevied for hurricane Katrina victims. He wasn't required to do this, it was optional. So it took him two days to get there. Once he did, he went to the entrance he was directed to go. He walked up and said "I'm here to drop off all the Ohio donations" (maybe not exactly that, but along those lines) and the volunteer went nuts! Started yelling "we dont want them, take them back". My dad said listen I just drove for 2 days to bring this here to help these people. The volunteer went inside and shut\locked the door and changed the 'open 24 hours' sign to closed, looked at my dad and flicked him off. My dad was of course pissed off. He called this number he was giving incase of a problem and ended up talking to the big-wig that operates red cross. My dad explained his situation and also added that the volunteer was way out of line to turn down his shipment and etc. This guy went on to say that, they are volunteers and have been really busy lately (of course) and he apologizes for the way he acted but there was really nothing he could do about it. Well dad said thats fine, sure. But who's going to take this shipment? The big-wig said, well if he closed up the place, then no one will be back until monday, so you'll have to wait until then. My dad said I thought this was a 24 hour office? Yes he said but only depending on if we have enough volunteers. My dad said well I can't wait until monday! I have to be back for work on monday. (This was thursday when he arrived). So my dad had to drive back home with his shipment.

How does this make any sense? I keep seeing all these advertisments on tv to donate and please send money, etc. Yet, this happens. I understand that the volunteers are probably tired but coming all the way from ohio? This was everything that Ohio has gathered as an entire state. and they turn it down? The redcross where he had to drop it off was the same site as a national guard base I guess. Why couldn't they help? This blows my mind.
I just wanted some comments for you guys on what you think about this....My dad feels like trash now because he feels like there is something else that should have been done so these supplies could get to the people who need them, but I kept telling him there really wasnt anything else he could do. He cant unload the stuff my himself! Being on skids and skrink wrapped and all that! Oy Yoy yoy. Comments?

    Re: Redcross Turned Down Donations

that's why the people here are doing donations through churches... and churches have already contact other churches in the Gulf Coast area.. and have it arranged...

I gave them 20+ screw guns (battery powered screw guns by DeWalt).. like hubby uses on the job... once they get a little old, weak, have minor problems.. he ditches them in a storage building we have...

they cost about $200 each... but are only worth 20-40 bucks at a pawn shop IF you check them out and have all the parts in the box etc..

I sent a bunch of that stuff.. and the church people HERE are going to 'refurbish' and charge batteries and be sure they only send the ones in working order..

the moral of the story is..... try to get in touch with a church or some local group that has already made arrangements to disperse stuff..

no comments from me, but please don't base your opinions off of one crazy, idiotic, moronic jerk (and those are the best clean words I could think of). The sad thing is that I'm postitive that somewhere there is a family who could use some of the stuff on that truck and the moron your father encountered has ruined it for them.

Your dad's not the one who should feel like trash. I'm sure it's a stressful situation for all the volunteers, but even more so for the people who need the stuff. So if the volunteer was that stressed out why not flip off your dad, swear at him, screech his stupid head off if necessary, but let the supplies go in. I dunno. Who can explain it. Maybe the guy was having a nervous breakdown, but your dad shouldn't feel bad. He already did more than a lot of people would have. Don't let him feel bad about it.

I guess he could call the local news and make sure someone gets the story out at least. Maybe there is a local homeless or womens shelter that could use the supplies.

My opinion isnt against the red cross, I know they have alot on there plate right now and what they offer is wonderful but you would think that since my dad talked with the person in charge he would send someone out. Waiting a day until someone could come out wouldnt have been a big deal, but to wait from thursday until monday? thats ridiculous! I just think that for all they have been doing to get the word out to please donate, they should have found some way to get the things from my dad.

LADYINRED-Yeah, I understand that people have breakdowns. And we all have bad days, but that was a big step to turn those supplies down. This just erks me! Thanks for the comments though.

MOTHEROFGIZMO-That's a great idea. He tried calling to see if there was any other location he would be able to drop the stuff off at, either in Alabama or somewhere along the way back home and they said it was for that destination and if they don't take it, it has to go back to First Energy. I just wonder if since the people who were supposed to take it, didnt.....and they dont want it to go anywhere else, are they going to destroy it? and if so, how could you get it and offer it to somewhere else yourself? Hmm...Thanks for your comments!
