  • Ever been to any of these haunted places?

My experiences? Let's just say I was surprised to see two I'd actually experienced... My personal experiences are in italics...

Tacoma - Lakewood - The Old Western State Sanitarium -Feelings of being watched, panic and sadness. On some rainy foggy night when the Moon is full, you can hear moans and footsteps in the late to early morning hours. Believed to be patients that once were institutionalized there. That place is in ruins now but there remains and boiler room underground that is where most the sounds are heard. The fence around also shakes when no one else is with you.

On a lark some friends and I went here to futz around in the afternoon. We walked along the ruins of this place and, while it was bright, we always felt as though we were being watched. It was a thoroughly Blair Witch experience, if you know what I mean. As the sun began to set, we found ourselves in the middle of a field where it was surmised patients were buried in unmarked tombs... but, as the sun hit the horizon, the field was, for a moment, illuminated, and you could see the perfect outlines of the shapes of graves, and we were in the middle of that field! If you've never seen three people run in midair for 250 feet you didn't see us! It is an experience which, to this day, gives me the woolies.

Tacoma - Lakewood - Pierce Lake - There is a lake in the woods that is located behind pierce college on the way to the old Western state sanitarium. At night early morning hours you feel a presence, see hazy apparitions and hear voices around the lake. They belonged to a woman that drowned there many years ago.

Hubby and I used to walk this lake everyday after school. In its ancient setting, you could see the ruins just to the left of the trail as you walked along the silent paths behind the college. It was usually unsettling, an extremely uncertain peace about it, as though even the dead leaves that fell there in autumn were not quite ever dead. I wonder if everything there ever was... I never did walk there alone, and when hubby and I walked it, we usually sang hymns or prayed from time to time. I think this was our way of coping with the extreme disquiet we felt when walking laps around that eerily quiet body of restless water.

    Cleo,

I didn't know you lived around the Tacoma area, that's not too far away from me ... are you originally from Washington?

Those are creepy stories, and I do just love it. I've always loved the paranormal. I've had a few questionable experiences, and been in homes that are 'dark' ... but nothing as extreme as actually seeing anything!

I have relatives in the Sedro Woolley area, that one has another mental hospital where the first frontal lobotomy was performed and is thought to have many, many people buried in unmarked graves...there are 3 different entries for that one (*shivers*)...and the worst is they use the buildings for the Job Corp, eek!

About stories though, my daughter and son had an experience a few years ago. We live near a turn of the century cemetery. During the summer, my kids and the neighbor kids could boulder hop across the river and then cross the nearby flume and walk over to the cemetery. They were walking below the actual cemetery, one of the kids turned and saw a guy standing perfectly still just above them on a hill...they said it freaked them out just seeing him. They walked by him as a group and once safely past, the neighbor kid turned to look again and he was gone. I heard this story in it's breathless glory...after they ran, leaped and boulder hopped back home...I believe them...there was real fear in their eyes. And none of them have gone back since.

That is frightening!!! OMG! I lived in Washington for years! I even had a friend who worked at Western State, which is also said to be haunted. The place was filled with disquiet souls which were living. I am sure there had to be some disquieted non-living ones as well... There are theories that many of the mentally insane were actually possessed by demons...

I could ask her. The stories she told me about the patients there still haunt me to this day! The creepy things they'd say to her...

Wow Cleo that link freaked me out. I live in the Fredericksburg VA area and work at the Old Hospital on Fall Hill. At night when I've been here by myself I've gotten really creeped out that I was being watched. I called the security on 2 different occasions at night and made them secure the suite. I always thought it was haunted.

I think my woods is also haunted, it was once the property that belonged to the owners who owned the slaves that spawned the book Roots. I've seen the plantation which is about 5 miles as the crow flies and I can feel things just driving by. And one more, another house very close and very old has been sold at least 10 times since I've lived in the country. Real estate agents must disclose "suspected paranormal activity".
And that house makes the hairs raise on my neck when I drive by it.

I also lived in Washington for 40 some years
My dad used to tell us of this story:
Dillsboro NC- GSMR Tunnel - When Norfolk-Southern began expansion into the southwest mountains of North Carolina, it was difficult for the company to find men able to do the hard work required. Convicts were brought in to complete work on a tunnel right outside of Dillsboro. To get to the site, the men had to cross a section of the Tuckaseegee River on raft. One day, the raft flipped over in the rain-swollen river and all of the convicts died (except one) because they were chained together. The men were buried on the mountain above the tunnel. Sometimes, especially after a big rain, people report hearing chains rattling and the echoes of men splashing in water yelling for help. **Interesting fact about this tunnel** This is the same tunnel Harrison Ford walks into in the movie 'The Fugitive'.

my father lived on the river there. When your watching the movie after the crash you can see the house my father was born in on the hillside. The movie left the crash site all there and its a tourist attration now, my fathers homplace is right across the river. You can stand and wave as the tourist go by LOL

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally!

Re: Ever been to any of these haunted places?

My writer friend won a contest. The theme was to write about something you wish you'd done, but never did in your life. She wrote that she wished she had pursued being a GHOST BUSTER. She won 1st prize. They sent her $4,000 worth of equipment to detect ghosts. She rounded up 12 of us and we went to an old hotel in SLC that was supposed to be haunted. We went there at 11:30 pm and set up three groups of four people each. Each group was assigned a certain area. After 1/2 hour, we changed areas. Afterwards, we all examined our notes, photos, recordings, etc. It was a blast. We got some 'orb' lights on the photos...some strange sounds on the recordings. One that we could understand sounded like he said, "Who are you?" in a deep voice.

According to the legend, the hotel had a homeless person living in the basement (illegally). When he was found by the hotel owner, he ran up the back fire-escape and jumped to his death. They said he still haunts the place and scares the guests. They've also seen people in turn of the century clothing and hair-dos walking around and riding in the elevator. We didn't see any of that, but it was sure fun to go ghost hunting.

Wow, Cleo! You've been through a lot!

Yep. The first year we moved from Florida back to Ohio to live near dh's parents, we took a trip to Gore Orphanage. It's more of a "tale" then truth, but people in these parts wanted to believe in something. Personally, I went in with an open mind of not believeing and came out aware of not being alone. Creepy?

There are lots of "haunted" places in my area. I use to work midnights in one of them. First of all, they got part of the story wrong at that web site. Secondly, nothing ever happened there, and I worked midnights there for 9 years, sometimes alone. Not one thing ever happened and sometimes I wished it would have.

Real life is far more scarier than anything on that site.

Ok, got one more to tell then I'll shut up. We went to South Dakota for vacation this year. Road trip, South Dakota, Colorado and back home. Anyway we stayed at the Bullock Hotel in Deadwood South Dakota for two nights. I had heard the rumors so I wanted to stay here. When we arrived we unloaded the toiletry bag and went to the desk to check in. I got the key and took the toiletry bag to the room and DH went to the truck to get the rest of the luggage. When I got to the door, (we were four doors down from the room that the most activity is reported in) I put the key in the door and turned. Nothing. I tried again. Nothing. I tried again. Nothing. I was just about ready to go downstairs and ask if they were sure it was the correct key. I said outloud, "Damn it Seth, let me in." The key opened the door without a problem. Every hair on my arm stood up. We didn't have anything else happen while there, but I like to think I had my own mini encounter with Mr. Bullock.
