I need your help. I am searching for a good Catholic version study bible. Right now I have a Thomas Nelson New King James Version Study Bible. I love it, but I want a good study Bible with the Apocrypha in it.

Nelson apparently does not make this study Bible in the Revised Standard form. I do not want the New Revised Version. I prefer the language closest to the New King James Version.

Well, I am easing myself into this, and I have always read the King James, or more recently , the New King James Version. I do not care for the wording that is too modern, like the Living Bible, although I think these are good for persons that have never read the Bible in any form as a starter.

I love the Nelson Study Bible that I have, but it dos not have all of the books that the Catholic versions have.

I ordered from Amazon the Oxford Study Bible in the Revised Standard Edition. I got it in paperback, which I really did not want, but I want to make sure I like it first. If I do, or someone has another good suggestion to check out, I may still get it in Leather.

I have never read any of the other versions that you mention. THe Church uses the American Bible I believe, but I want a good study bible with commentary in it, and from reading on the internet most places seemed to use the Revised Standard Version. I have a New Revised Standard Version at home from my daughter's religion class in 5th grade, but I do not want that version.

              Re: Catholic Study Bible

I guess you are asking for a Hard Copy printed Bible with lots of notes.

I can't advise on that because the US market will be different to the UK.

The biggest collection of online texts is here

              http://www.biblegateway.com/

There is a translation listed here called "New King James"

But the "King James Bible" is a product of the Church of England. It is available with Apocrapha - almost The Duetero-Canonical Books in Roman Catholic Bibles.

The RC Translation from the time of the King James Bible is known as the Douay Bible

              See
              http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05140a.htm

If you are looking for a fairly conservative translation in tarditional English with "Thees and thous" they used to produce in UK a Revised Standard Version (Catholic Edition) the American Standard Edition would be the US equivalent. You may need to look in second hand bookshops - and if you can't find a "Catholic Editiion" look for a copy "With Apocrapha" - this would have been in common use in Episcopalan circles and would be missing only a few obscure chapters over a "Catholic Edition"

The New RSV is now the prefered translation in the Church of England and the version is UK English is here:

              http://bible.oremus.org/

You can change the edition to the US version in the drop down menu.

The NRSV has all the classical cadences of the RSV (as inherited for King James) but without the "thees and thous"

              Thats a lot of choice!

Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
              he said, 'Don't count calories.'

                Good for you.
I was just curious as the folk who wrote the king james alterend many verses because they didn't know the correct translation of the meaning of some stuff and wanted to make it "flow" in other places. I was reading one newer version in a class room at church and all over the place it said the greek ( or latin or hebrew) word_____ used here was used to mean ___________ and it gives the passage a whole different connotation knowing that.

My husband has a co-worker that went from Baptist to Jewish. I joined the Catholic Church last year. Considering I wasn't raised in a certain church my family was very supportive. I use the Fireside Catholic Study Bible, it's a "New American Bible"...I bought it at the Abbey in Mt.Angel last year...I really enjoy it. Here's a handy link for some more personal study... http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm If you don't mind me asking, are you in RCIA?

                              LOL.

I have been married to my husband for 19 years, so I have been around the Catholic church a while. Thanks for the prayers though. I always say when people ask me how we raise our children that we raise them in both churches, and these days the more God you have the better off you are.

I am going to RCIA. My mother in law is my sponsor. She is a great woman, and I always said that if I ever converted she would be it.
