  • Any tips for moving out of state?

    Hey everyone,

I'm sure some of you have been wondering where i've been. Pretty much i've been stuck in the middle of a hectic move. Working two jobs trying to scrape together enough money for my big adventure. Still sticking to my Atkins WOE here though and maintaining so I guess thats good news.

I was hoping some of you that have moved around a bit have a few tips or ideas to help me out here. My fiance wants to attend a culinary school in New York. Problem being we live in Connecticut. She has applied and if shes accepted we'll be leaving around July of 05. Theres not much in the way of work here so i'm barely pulling 24k from working myself and she only works part time her salary barely amounts to 8k a year.

This is going to be impossible. I have to go to NY and find myself a job, where I work now I can't transfer. Than I have to find an apartment that we can afford in NY hah yeah like thats going to happen. The school is in Hyde Park and even the nearby areas theres hardly anything under $1000/month. She won't wait to apply until we move which I think is the better idea. If we get settled and than she applies there won't be all of this hassle its all about timing and something isn't going to pan out. How I'm supposed to find a job in the area, how shes supposed to find a job in the area. And than find an apartment all at the same time is beyond me.

Theres just so much involved I don't see how its possible. When you apply you can only get a dorm or live off campus. If we can't find an apartment she won't be able to get herself a dorm so its like we have one shot at this. Any ideas for a less expensive area near Hyde Park if anyones from NY? All we need is a tiny studio apartment. Should I look for someone that needs roomates that would be easier to just walk into..I don't know. I'd live in a YMCA if I had to but I doubt shes up for that haha. Ugh its just so much stress I wish she'd go locally to a school here.

Thanks for any advice or beating me until I come to my senses. Either would be appreciated.

Okay, this sounds harsh, but do the two of you really need to live together while she is at the CIA? It might be more financially sound if she lives in the dorms and you (or her) visits on weekends.

If you guys get married NOW, not only do you qualify for student financial aid to the nth, but you also get a shot at cheap married student housing on campus.

Not to mention your car insurance rates will decrease quite a bit.

Just sayin'... good to see you, little bro!

        welcome back.

yep and I'm not sure where in COnn you guys are but many mnay NYC workers communt by train daily from CONN cause it is cheaper taxwise and housing costwise.

Has she talked with any financial aid from the culinary school and if being married might cut your amount cause at the small income she should qualifiy as financial needs bases.

And while you are doing all this how is your Atkins and your exercise going?

You can look for a job online--go to a site like Monster.com
Look up a website called CitySearch.com and they usually have links to housing for rent in the area so you can at least pick out some possibilities w/o going there physically.

Thanks for the ideas. No we don't have to live together but with how much I work and she'll be going to school and working we'd never see each other for 4 years having to commute back and forth to visit. I'm doing fine with my Atkins stuff and from having such a hectic day its actually fairly impossible to gain weight. I think I get enough exercise just working now haha. Its odd but it seems my metabolism has sped up also.
