  • How much do you spend on grocery/household per week

How much money do you spend on household items and groceries each week?

My husband thinks I spend too much, but I don't think he realizes exactly how much stuff costs these days. He assumes that we could get by on $80 per week, but today I spent $175 at Walmart. Of course, HE did not want to go with me. Only about 20 of that was not grocery/household related: On shirt at 7 bucks on clearance, and halloween candy at about 10, plus 5 bucks for a skirt ($2) and blouse ($3) combined for my daughter.

Dog food, meat, toothpaste, etc, add up. I am just trying to compare with other people. I have a family of him, myself, and two daughters, 2 dogs and a cat. Included in that amount is lunch for school for the week for one daughter.

Oy, we spend far far too much for just two people, I think. We spend about $100 - $120 on average per week. That's Canadian dollars, which is $84 - $100 US.

I'm trying to get it down to $80 per week (Canadian dollars).

We spend at least 120 a week, that's only counting the big trip on the weekend. I usually end up stopping at the store at least a couple of more times because we've forgotten something. We spend a lot. But the way I look at it is that we eat all of our meals from that. Most of our friends go out to eat at least 1-2 times during the week and they blow that much on 2 nights dinner! We eat a whole week on that.

There are three of us at my house, me..husband...22 year old daughter. We spend about $60 week. About $10 of that is for extra things as I have my two grandsons 2-3 nights a week.

I buy a lot of bulk items such as meat and divide it up into meals. We don't eat out so that saves a lot of money...and I don't buy a lot of steaks and other expensive foods. We eat a lot of chicken, turkey, tuna, casseroles, soups and salads. Since the farmer's market has shut down for the winter...I'm buying more frozen veggies in the bulk bag also.

We spend a lot, but I couldn't give you an exact number. We eat holistically as much as we can, so the milk comes delivered from the local dairy every week in glass bottles. We only buy meat that is certified to be hormone and anti-biotic free. Our vegetables have to be quality, and anything we buy that is nor processed or is organic is a lot more expensive. The turkey we're buying for Thanksgiving? Over $2 a pound because it comes certified organic with no hormones, growth 'drugs' or antibiotics.

Hubby and I spend about $150 per week also. This time of year, I can save a little $$ by going to the Farmer's market, instead of buying produce from Publix. Publix produce is gross, and grossly overpriced. I also found that buying my meat from a local butcher, is much less expensive than buying from the big chain grocery stores. I get Ribeye Steaks for 9.99 per pound, instead of $16 per pound, and boneless chicken breasts for 2.50 per pound, instead of 4.99 per pound. And what I really love about my butcher, is he doesn't add food coloring to the beef to make it "look fresh" because it IS fresh! He also doesn't inject the chickens with "water and flavoring". Fresh fresh fresh.

Re: How much do you spend on grocery/household per week

I've been paring down our grocery budget for a while. We used to spend about $200+/wk for the 2 of us, but financial stuff happened so I had to budget better. We now spend about $100/wk for 2 adults and a 2 year old child. This usually includes a bag of kitty litter I buy every month, toilet paper, diapers, one tank of gas for our economy car at about $35 for the week and most necessities. I may spend a little more one week when I go to Sam's Club and stock up on some meat, but that means I usually don't have to spend as much the rest of the month. I calculate clothes shopping seperately. I tend to do that with our income tax refund or use any extra money for that when we need stuff. I cut our grocery bill quite a bit shopping at the dollar store, grocery outlet discount store (they have lots of LC goodies for real cheap and toothpaste is $1) and WinCo Foods (elsewhere it might be called Cub Foods - it's like Food Maxx but consitently higher quality and brand names are sold there). I figure that for groceries and necessities, we spend about $25 per person per week. As the budget increases I'm sure it'll go up to $35 per person. Hope this helps!

HOLY COW! $16 for Ribeyes? We dont' pay that for Filet Mignon! I shope the sale adds, Ribeyes which are my favorite usually go on sale for $5.98 a lb here! 9.99 to 10.99 is the regular price in the chain grocers here!

MOG, I think groceries are unusually expensive here. I went shopping with my sis when I went back up north for a visit, and I noticed that things were considerably cheaper.

Re: How much do you spend on grocery/household per week

I found florida to be horribly expensive for groceries when i was down there earlier this year..I was really shocked at the prices.

I shop using store flyers (get them every friday)... i write a list of what each store has. i won't go too far for a sale or it's not worth it..most of them are close together. I also try to get meat in bulk at costco when i can, though i need at least $150 in my account just to walk in there! so i don't go often

I've recently just redone my budget so i'm trying to cut back a bit. I clip coupons too..but i usually forget them then they expire

and we rarely eat out..maybe 2 or 3 times a year. i hate to spend the $$.

Re: How much do you spend on grocery/household per week

For my family of 6, I estimate we normally spend about $150-175 per week in groceries. Switching from the mega-chains to the local grocery store really made a difference in the quality of groceries, especially where it counts - vegetables and meat aisle. Being able to select your piece of steak, roast, or ribs makes all the difference in the world. They also pay their meat cutters a nice wage, so you know they care about the end product. We were lured by the big box stores for too long and are glad to be out of them.

Our biggest problem is multiple trips per week to the grocer. I think we should only have to go once, maybe twice the grocer per week. The DW on the other hand finds a reason to go multiple time per week. ARGH!

I hate to admit that Josh and I spend probably $75 for just the two of us. However, much of that is meat, which seems very expensive right now for some reason. Of course, he has to have those franken-bars too so they are EXPENSIVE! Whole foods...whole foods...I keep preaching it to him.
