I'll take that as a "no" vote, Sheshy!

You'd be surprised how many people share my opinion, though.

I have an idea. (sure, I don't post often, but that doesn't make my comments any less valid than others)

Keep chat and other 'meaningless' chatter posts out of total post count since total post count is used in the calculation of the reputation field (thanks for the link, 2big). This would reward people for actually helping people with their weight loss struggles.
Hmmm...that's an interesting idea. So how would you actually code that? Would the software search for certain keywords in the posts and send them to the "meaningless chatter" bucket? And what would those keywords be? I'm not totally picturing how this idea could get implemented...help me out.

And YOU must find this topic interesting enough to post to it 3 times...out of your total 7 posts. That's like 43% of your posts dedicated to this topic. Uh huh.

Actually, it doesn't bother me a bit and it could go either way! My post was in response to calling other folks posts 'meaningless'...

I should have been more specific.

          Member 2: "No"
          Member 1: "Hey"
Member 2: "You talking to me?"
          Member 1: "Yea"
          Member 2: "I'm bored"
          Member 3: "Me too!"
          Member 2: "Really?"
          Member 1: "Yea"
          Member 2: "I need a drink"
Member 3: "Have one on me"
          Member 2: "....."
          Member 1: "...."

Seriously, I love the support everyone gives each other and a lot of "chat" is supportive but a lot of it is also meaningless and should not count toward post total if the total posts are used to calculate Rep points.

Yea, you could say that. Actually, a lot of my posts have been culled during the earlier "purge" periods. I can't complain, though. This board has been very good to me.

That's very good to hear. So why don't you post about your Atkins story? I'd love to hear it.

Meaningless posts? All posts mean something to someone! Maybe I think asking "what can I eat" is meaningless, the list is in the book, and its posted on the board as well. But how many times a week do we see that kind of post?

I think it is all about perception. I like to give people rep because to me, it is like a pat on the back that they can remember and keep (as the comment stays there for a while); whereas, private messages should be deleted to keep the box from filling up. So, to me it is a way to tell someone that they have been good to me, I support what they are doing or I feel they have posted something awesome.

As for meaningless posts, well...the perception plays a role. In the conversation that was used as an example it could be perceived as useless banter. However, there are times, especially in the beginning, when that same banter with someone on here kept me from running to the kitchen and eating something bad. I needed something silly or benign to ramble about so my mind was not on the evil food in the kitchen. So, if posts are meaningless to some people, I think that they have every right to that opinion, but remember that to someone else, it could have been a lifelife to stop a cheat. I know Sheshy (Shelly) has had banter with me and it keeps me from eating in the evening just knowing she is going to be there and that there is someone to talk to.

These, of course, are just my opinions and whatever is decided by the mods is fine with me.

you can only see the last 10 reps you receive so they too are "cleaned out" by the board automatically even faster then your PM box which if you are a supporting meember of ADBB can be 200 messages large

I agree 100%. I don't read what doesn't mean anything to me. If rep points mean something to me i'll read them. If I want to receive PM's I will, if i don't i'll turn that feature off. I don't have to visit every forum if I choose not too, if i find them 'meaningless' then i won't. No one can tell me what is meaningless and what isn't, it's all very personal.

Implement what? Scan for words and move theads? That was not my suggestion. From what I gleaned from the manual there is a feature to remove posts in selected forums from a persons overall post count. Not delete the posts themselves. It is set at the forum level and could be implemented with a click of a button.

For example: "testing signatures" in the Testing section. Each iteration of a test counts toward post count. *just an example*

As to those interested in my story...it was wiped out here a long time ago during culling and I'm not inclined to share it over again. I will share my story privately with anyone, though.

And, I apologize for using the word 'meaningless'. It appears that I am discounting the value of idle chatting on the board. That was not my intention. Just a bad choice of words.

                          Ta!

yep that manual is full of one click fixes and all it takes is admin deciding what will and will not be and since they are counted our current admins has either desided to go with settings they inheruited from the previous admins or set their "clicks" where they want them.

This thread is cracking me up!

Who cares about post counts and rep, its just a fun feature for those who are into that sort of thing...the rest should just ignore it. Its amazing to me that most of us are susposed to be adults and will go on whining for days about the pettiest little crap thing. Everyone does realize that we don't get any kind of prize or cash payout for having the most rep....don't you?

Its not even as important as those little stars we used to earn next to our names in Kindergarten LOL.

You know some folks hate emoticons? Maybe we should start another thread about maybe getting rid of them? Or maybe we shouldn't have the option to make our type face bigger or in pretty colors?
