ok, it is time. I need to be totally honest and today is Thanksgiving and I feel the need to set things straight. I need to confess.
IT WAS ME!!!!
I was the one that repped 2big for perfect attendance in running amuk .
Yes......I was the original abuser of the rep system. I WAS NAUGHTY! But, you have to remember I was the original "bad girl" also and sometimes I revert. I'm so ashamed....NOT! I would do it again! I AM A REBEL, yeah right.
2big is correct with this quote:
Perhasp if you did read it you would understand. it clearly says when you click the sclae thingie ADD TO REPUTATION not share the love. you would also understand spreading the love is abusing the reputaion system. It asks you to rate and comment on _________'s post not make ____________ feel good. it is not a feel good system it is only a feel good system because folk are abusing the system now.
The problem with reps is the way it is written. Technically speaking 2big is correct. But, ya all know I am the technically challenged administrator!!! Kent has stated we cannot change the wording.
IMHO.....reps are pretty much a personal thing between the reppee and the repper (I don't think those are words). You can define why you are repping in your comment.
Now, we need to move on and decide what we are going to do. What do we need to change (that is changable!).
ok, I mainly just needed to confess and get that off my chest.
Oh Bren, Bren, Bren....now I don't feel so bad for "abusing" the system 'cause if the all mighty Bren can then the lowly wannabe can too. Woo hoo! Sorry 2big.
I do understand what 2big is saying. The system was designed in a way as to show new people who the "knowledgable" people are because their posts were highly supported by people repping them (the post). When used in the way that many of us are...it becomes more of a popularity indicator than what is was meant to truly be.
No matter how we change it to suit "our" specific needs here, there are many other communities out there using vbulletin with or without the repping system turned on and those using the rep system may interpret our system as the "true" way it was meant to be.
I think we're fighting a losing battle here.
Does anyone know of any other vbulletin sites using the rep system as it was designed to be used? The ones I know about have this feature turned off.
Bren might be technically challenged, but I am still completely in the dark about thoes stupid little green boxes that you guys are sprouting and rep points. But since I have reread and reread this 430 odd posts and still don't get it, I probably never will.
The two other boards that I am on don't use them, one is vbulletin.
I still think that they are all related to the number of posts that you get, as 2big has the most, and then it goes down from there. The little green pimples on the other hand don't seem to corrolate to anything.
And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I will list my paypal account and anyone who wants them can donate to the "Lynne is Retiring and gonna be broke" fund. I think mine are worth about a dollar three eighty, by the way.

If you don't know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else. - Yogi Berra
Rep power (the number) is based on the number of posts a person has.
The little green boxes is based on the rep you get from people with admins and mods having higher points to give than anyone else.
So you can have a lot of posts and have a high rep power number but have only a few green boxes if you don't get many reps.
Just follow Heidi's lead and share the love! If little green pimples bother you - do not look at the right hand of your screen or ask Admin to turn off the feature on your account. If you're still confused about it - walk away!
Here! Here! Perry, well said! I'm just concentrating on the fact that this board is a wonderful place, with wonderful people, who are supportive, motivating, knowledgeable, and helpful. The board and the people have been instrumental in my success, all the rest is just fluff! Let's get on with the important thing that we can all agree on, we're all here for the same reasons, to become healthier, fitter, and happier!
With those final thoughts, I am closing this thread. This is not to say I am not open to further specific discussion on reputation in the board volunteers forum, and I welcome the thoughts. I just think pointing someone at this thread now as a means to achieve change is counterproductive. I can follow the thread most days as it grows beyond, and hence suggestions may be being made, and I am not able to follow up on them. Again, I think the board has ruled pretty convincingly that they like they like the feature on a ratio of 3 to 1, and I also think it is pretty self-evident that we use reputations in a different method than most other boards (for better or for worse).
If you have specific reputation questions, feel free to pm your favorite mod or admin. If they can't answer the question, I am sure they know someone who can.
