Hey, a traditional breakfast here is Pig Brains and Scrambled Eggs! Boy, knowing that was waiting for you would really make you jump outta bed in the morning wouldn't it! **blek**
When I was a kid, shad roe ( the eggs of the shad--a type of fish) was a big treat. And around here, near the Chesapeake Bay area, the crab "mustard" is something people like. The "mustard" is the fat and eggs of a crab, when it is cooked, the color is yellow and orange.

Does the US have anything equal to the British 'off licence'. Here in Oz we call it BYO or BYOG (Bring Your Own (Grog)). Smaller restaurants which cannot qualify for a liquor licence can get this, and you can BYO to many licenced restaurants if you ring and check first. You have to have a meal though, you can't walk in with a few bottle sand order a sandwich.

And they charge you 'corkage' to open the bottle and provide glasses - ranges from a couple of bucks per bottle to $10 to $15 per head in pretentious retaurants with a wine list.

You'll usually find a bottle shop near a good BYO restaurant, the one feeds the other.
I read the other day on the paper of a restaurant charging 'cakeage' when people wanted to take their own birthday cake (and they wanted $5.50 a head!). The dining party went elsewhere.

We still have some "dry" counties here where you can do that. We call it "brown bagging" You have to pay a "corkage" fee here too and they make you pay for glasses of ice and mixers.

We have counties where you cannot even purchase alcohol! And we counties where it is illegal to serve "liquor by the drink" in restaurants!

Actually, back east (Long Island) Soda is called soda. Out in the southwest (Arizona) it's called Pop.
When I moved from LI to AZ I had someone ask if I wanted a "pop" and I looked at them like they were strange and said "I have a Pop (my dad) he lives in Mississippi!"
So in America alone we have different words for the same thing!! When I lived in MS I bought a book on "how to talk southern". Seriously.

We only know "knock you up" as being impregnated (to put is politely). I guess we speak a lot of American in England also.

Also, I guess is american for the english "I suppose".

Knock you up has the same meaning here as Britain, but it's second meaning is to wake someone up, usually used in connection with someone's house (I think it comes as a shorthand from knocking on the door).

Eg, "I'll go around to Sam's place and knock him up".

Well, not the folk from Glasgow, Rich.

But those from the North West coast of the Highlands are said to speak a particularly pure English. It would be the language they were forced to speak after the supression of Gaelic which followed the Stuart uprisings.
