  • School Choices & Career Questions! HELP! I'm stuck...

Hi Guys! I feel a little weird about posting something like this but i'm really confused. I'll give ya the run down...
When I graduated about 2 years ago I started Kent State University for Psychology, then a while later I ended up switching it to Business Management. Well then I got the boot from my parents and got my own place, so I switched from day classes to evening. THEN my job interferred and I kept getting to class late because work would hold me over and I couldn't tell them no...because, I gotta pay rent!!! So I *QUIT* school, as important as it was to me, but I dont think I had a choice because rent was a must! Anywho--I really want to go back to school and get it over with but I still can't go because of my job. I've been looking at the Technical Schools because they offer evening classes that would give me time in between, BUT someone started talking to me about the Online courses...(here's where i'm confused so any advice would be great!) It's probably upto the employer to look at it however they want. Either i'm lazy and didnt want to go to class so I did it online, or I couldnt go so I went online. I'm looking for your advice about the Online courses....!

    Another .....

Like I said at first it was Psychology, then Business Management. I've been going around to some technical schools to see what they offer. One that I really liked was Health Care Administration. I don't want anything clinical because if I have to give someone a shot, you better believe im passing out! My current job is pretty much administration, but I start my new job the 21st and I will be working for a group of doctor's. And as greedy as this may sound.....I want to find something that I enjoy and have the opportunity to make alot of money.
My goal is to go to school, stay where i'm at (location wise) and build up my experience and then move out of state and pursue what i've been taught. I have a very strong will to make something out of myself and be the opposite of what most people in my family have become. But I feel like i'm stuck because of the work schedule and the schooling.

Not sure what that last paragraph was meant to say, lol, but I just need some feedback and I figured was the place to come for honesty and support, as I have no one else to help with this decision but myself. I'd really appreciate any feedback that you can give.

I'm trying hard to succeed with what i've been given so far, but I need to go farther with my education and just not sure what to do So this is my cry for help!!! lol, sorry if this is a bit much for anyone, just feel lost and need some advice, thanks in advance guys.

My husband id using University of Phoenix. They are really good and through the whole program meet on the same night every week - no changes. They do have some intense homework, but unlike most schools, they have you do most of it in teams which lightens the load and gives you a real perspective on the business environment. It's also easy to get gov't grants and stuff through them. Tuition is comparable with other schools - timeframe is shorter and you concentrate on one class at a time for a period of 5 weeks. They offer all programs you outlined above my hubby is currently in Business Management.

      Thanks Slim!

University of Phoenix is one that i've been really looking into. I'm just nervous about the online courses because i'm not sure how they are viewed by employers when you've done those instead of actually going to class, Ya know what I mean?

When I was going to KSU it was about $1,000 roughly a semester and I was part-time. The technical schools are about $18,000 for the entire 2 years. Either way, school is expensive and i'm ready for that. It will be worth it when i'm finished.

      Thanks again!

Actually, University of Phoenix is one of the ones they approve of because of the way they design their couses. My husband works at Hewlett Packard and they seem to really like the school and tend to not question a degree from there. That is THE school that working professionals usually attend to further their carrers.

Re: School Choices & Career Questions! HELP! I'm stuck...

I would NOT recommend a technical school. My husband went to a place called "Virginia College" (not sure if it is Alabama only or national) and got an Associate's in Network Engineering. He had to take English, Math, and his network courses. He now has 25,000 in student loans and has had to start over at a community college because no university will accept those credits.

My advice--start at a community college and finish up your basics. Maths, English, History, Sciences, etc. Cheap and made for working people. Once all set there, look at programs at a local university. Maybe you can fit in a class 2-3 days a week at lunchtime and/or 2-3 nights a week. Some universities have weekend classes. A lot of business programs are designed for people going back to school.

Why should you believe me? lol....Well, I have a 4-year degree (BA) in English and History. What am I doing with that? Working and going back to school for Electrical Engineering! I started out at a community college and finished up my basics.

Also...a lot of community colleges have training programs similar to a tech school. For example, you could get an Associate's in Business or Computer Information Systems, then finish up at a University in Business or Management Information Systems. Both of those are good healthcare related fields. Hope this helps!

Re: School Choices & Career Questions! HELP! I'm stuck...

                Hello,

I am a college English and speech professor for the following online schools (they also have ground classes):

                Franklin University
                Baker College
                Kaplan University
                National American University
                Art Institute

I used to work for ITT as well. I can answer any questions you have about online classes or learning. However, I will tell you up front that they require much more self-discipline than ground classes. Just PM me with any questions you have and I will help you out.

                  Allier,

It really depends on the technical school actually. No school can guarantee that any other school will take your credits whether technical or not. Community colleges are great as I started out there, but they are not for everyone because of time and other restrictions.

                    Slimin,

The top three online college in order are:

                    1. Baker College
                    2. University of Phoenix
                    3. Kaplan University

These rankings are for undergraduate degrees only. Also, since all three of these schools have ground campus classes, most employers will do tuition the same as any other school.

Re: School Choices & Career Questions! HELP! I'm stuck...

                      Hi!

This would probably not fit in with all your plans, but if I can give my ten cent's worth, it would be this:

I studied for 7 years at the University of Pretoria. Human Genetics. After that, I "took a break" before starting (what I thought) would be a wonderful career, curing cancer, aids etc. I am a qualified Scuba Diving instructor, and for my break decided to do that for a while. Then my bf at the time asked me to marry him, which I did, (and a stepson who has been living with us for 5 years now). Then I taught kids 6months - 4 years water safety, and stroke correction to the older kids. Got pregnant, twice, have 2 girls, aged 2 and 3. Now my husband and I own a Computer consulting company. The genetics career you ask? Nothing. Not a single thing done. It is now 7 years after university, and I made the last payment on my student debt on the 27th October 2005. If I had to do it over again, I would do the scuba first, go to all the places I can't now because we need to pay rent, keep kids in school etc.

If you're not entirely 100% sure what you want to do, take your backpack, work yourself around the world. Do yukky jobs, make lots of money, save up for a downpayment on a house, a car, start saving, whatever. You have the oppurtunity to do so much, don't be in a hurry. University is not running away, first find out exactly what it is you want, then go do it / get it.

Younger people are in such a hurry to join the ratrace until they are there! This is the one time in your life, between leaving your parents' home and making your own, that you can explore the whole wide world, and hey, if you ever decide to come to sunny South Africa, you'll have a place to stay.

                      Good luck to you!
