  • what is Flesch-Kincaid and why is it important?

okay got graded on my post writing stlye (see I'm listening to y'all) and she said my Flesh-Kincaid was 12. Since I'm cheap and don't want to pay for the rest of the evaluation to tell me about my bad spelling and grammar what are those and are they imprtant?

This site gives you some information on the testing method of the Flesh-Kincaid scale.
My computer automatically gives me this information when I am writing something. I don't know why (I'm not computer literate). But I use it for different ages of kids I am writing something for.

Microsoft Word has it as an extra feature in the spelling checker.

When you invoke the spell checker in word, click on the "Options" button and check the "Show readability statistics".

Becky gave a link to an article on it: http://www.readability.info/info.shtml

I don't know how important it is though.

Readability is a bunch of bunk. I teach English for a living and it does not hold true. Here is something that should scare you...the USA Today newspaper is written on the 6th grade level for people who are "average". The Wallstreet Journal is on the 9th grade level.

Very, very interesting. I didn't realize that was a feature in Word. I think that I'll start running communications from work through it... hehe

British newspapers vary a lot too - from "The Sun" (A Red Top Tabloid) to the "Financial Times" (A high Quality Broadsheet)

The old equation of quality and size no longer holds, since "The Times" started to publish in Tabloid format. The most downmarket papers are still in tablod format with a Red Banner across the top - hence "Red Top"

But a few Full stops at the end of sentences, and captal letters at the start would help, 2Big.

Your content is second to none, but you type to the forum as you would speak - and sometimes I just have to give up, which is a pity.

Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
                          he said, 'Don't count calories.'

2big-- I've used F-K before out of curiosity (it was available for the Atari ST years ago with their word program). I'm an English major, so I can BS my way through making it work for me and my appearing extremely intelligent, but the truth of the matter is this: you are a very smart woman, and what an F-K says about your grade level doesn't matter. It's the content that matters. And you're a content-a-paloosa!

Yeah, it is not accurate. But, type the post in WORD and spell check it and it will tell you your post's readability.
