  • Piano lessons (for Adults)

It looks like an uncle's upright piano might come to live with me. I never took music lessons of any sort as a child. But I do know how to read music (long story).

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has taken piano lessons as an adult. How hard is it? Would I be able to play simple tunes or will I have every deceased composer turning in their graves rueing the day I decided to take piano lessons?

Granted, I know if I take them, I won't be a concert level pianist, but it would be nice to be able to play a tune (hopefully well) for my own enjoyment.

go for it Megs! I have not taken lessons but when my daughter was learning I played along with her. It was so enjoyable! I too knew how to read music and putting it to the keyboard was fun and very relaxing!

go for it Megs! you may never play Carnegie Hall but if you like it what the heck. Otherwise that piano will just be another knicknack holder colleting dust.

        Three tips:

        1. Practice.

        2. Practice.

        3. Practice.

I'm really considering it, but I don't want to take a course that will try to make me into a concert pianist---you know, the kind that will drill you with classic technique and all that other stuff. I just want to learn to play well enough to play something decently.

I used Bastien's book "Piano for the Older Beginner" when my son was learning. He got so far in the book that when we did finally spring for lessons, he was in the advanced class, which was more bang for our buck. I did teach myself to play well enough that nobody was screaming at me to stop. It is wonderfully relaxing to play. I wish I hadn't had to stop when I tore my rotator cuff. I'd learn again if I had the time.

              Enjoy!
