  • Bummed .. My Very Good Friend Has Cancer

I just found out today that a very close dear friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer this week.

She and I are fairly close in age .. and have been friends for a long time. Now she's facing a huge crisis in her life and I feel totally inadequate to help! She's not on Atkins .. matter of fact, she pretty much eats all kinds of starch and sugars (which we know feed cancer cells...) I wish she'd change her eating habits!

That's a painful thing to find out hun, I'm so sorry. I will keep her in my thoughts. Things are so much better now than even 10 years ago when it comes to treating cancer, I hope her prognosis is as good as it can be, considering. Just keep loving her and hoping for the best.

betty, my best girlfriend (some know her as bla) is a breast cancer survivor. your friend can beat this. bla had so many other things that she was dealing with while trying to do chemo. i won't go into it all but i am saying this, if bla can beat it then your friend can too. have her get in touch with a survivor group. it is one of the things that helped my friend.

              Betty,

Thank goodness your friend has you in her life. I'm sure you are a great inspiration and support to her in this difficult time. Cancer is scary, but there have been some major breakthroughs in the disease in the past few years. I have three Aunts that are survivors. I'll keep you and your friend in my prayers!

Well, I now people off and on Atkins with that, my mom included, so I do not think harping on food intake at this point will be helpful. If it is anything like what my mom is doing now, she will be fine off and on and then sick. Everyone is different, so one day at a time is the best way to take it. This week, for example, I have been yelled at for evrything little thing I have done at her house, so I am not going over there this weekend. Next week she'l be fine again.

That's some harsh news and I hope only the best for your friend...
My best friends sister fought that battle and won a few years ago. She's had a double mastectomy/reconstruction and recently had a hysterectomy. Literally, as we speak, they are waiting to hear if the birth mother that chose them is in labour so they can go and be there to see their daughter being born.
She's an amazing woman, and I learned from her that a positive attitude is one of the biggest assets a woman can have in times like that.
They have made some amazing advances in this area, and again, I wish all good things to your friend and to you as well, so you can be there for her when she needs you.

So sorry to hear you've had such bad news. So sorry for your friend too. But, as the others have already said, there have been tremendous advances in fighting cancer these last few years. More and more people now fight the battle and win.

Probably right now isn't quite the time to try to persuade your friend to change her way of eating... but perhaps you might be vigilant for a time in the near future, when hopefully she's come to terms with her illness more and is able to listen to your advice and maker her decisions.

Positive vibes winging their way to you and your friend, over the ocean. (((hugs)))

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, ttdriver. I know how painful it is to feel so helpless. Please don't worry about being "inadequate help." Just be the same great friend you've always been. That will be more help to her than you realize.

{{{Betty and friend}}} I am so sorry to hear that your friend has cancer! Hopefully she will look to you as someone from whom to set her example. I'm sending up prayers for her! I have a friend who had cancer who is younger than I am, and it is extremely upsetting when there's nothing you can do to help them. But support and understanding are really worth so much when all is said and done, and I know you give a lot of both!

I feel your pain - just last week I found out that my father has lung cancer and it shot to the brain which has developed 1 large tumor and 4 smaller ones. They were pretty sure he was going to die from it just last Thursday. They treated the brain tumors aggressively and they've responded, now he has a chance to go through chemo. He's a very fit and healthy man bet has lost lots of weight this past week without eating and now he's eating lots of sugary stuff. Like you, I cringe when I see that knowing it feeds the cancer but on the other hand, he's too skinny for his height and build right now and should put some weight on before he goes through chemo. Take heart, sweetie! If they can make progress on my dad - they sure can do a good job for your friend also.
