Re: Cesar Millan -- The Dog Whisperer

Wow Sadie! You really have to put a lot of time in with your Border Collie. He sounds cute... Any pictures?

I just wanted to update and say that we decided to keep on working with Shadow (my DH's decision).

Right now we have a Pitt Bull and Bassett Hound mix that has been hanging around (for about a month) and we can't walk the dogs because the smaller one comes right up to you. Right now when he comes up to the fence Shadow tries to bite him through the fence so I don't think walking them would be a good idea if the dog comes up to us. This kind of stuff scares me.

I talked to a neighbor about these dogs and we don't know where they came from, but she has called Animal Control on them. So, we will wait and see. As soon as they are gone, we will pick up walking the dogs where we left off.

Have you thought about you, DH and Shadow going to obedience training together? I know the PetSmarts here have classes. That might help him and also allow you to work with him and start feeling more comfortable with him.

Our GP was a big baby for me. He would do anything for me, but he didn't listen to anyone else. He was never aggressive except with other animals, but that was his job. He was our livestock guardian (LGD). He preferred to be left alone, though since that was his nature.

We have a lab/border collie mix that is probably one of the best dogs I have ever owned. But he's jealous as I'll get out, even of kids.

Good luck with Shadow and keep us updated!

        Hey girlie!

We had thought about training when we first got him, but Matt wanted to wait and here we are a year and a half later. PetSmart is too far away and we'd be afraid to bring him in public since he's gotten so aggressive.

He is stand-offish and doesn't want to be petted much. He was very hyper until we got him his little girlfriend, Kota. Now he is more behaved and seems to have calmed down some.

He is very true to type with the guarding thing. He acts like he is always on duty. While we're playing with them if he hears something, he'll stop and go to the door or bark. Yet, Kota, our other dog just continues on. It is like he feels like he can't have too much fun -- he has to work and be on duty.

Does your lab/BC mix ever bite?

I'll let you know if anything else comes up. Thanks for posting. It is nice to hear from someone else who has this breed of dog.

BTW, I've always liked the Lowchens (not shaved like the lion though). It was the dog on "Hart to Hart" and I think they are adorable and from what I've read they have a great personality.

Gunnar does tend to get a little anxious when there's a lot of new people around. It took him a while to realize that noisy kids, are just that and not a threat. He actually did snap at someone, but he thought he was protecting me. He never hit skin, but we probably would have if the guy hadn't been holding a beer at the time. It's definitely nice to have a guard dog like that around. I've never been afraid of staying by myself because I know my first line of defense can be vicious.

Maybe Shadow will grow out of it. It normally takes bigger dogs longer to leave the puppy stage. Hopefully he'll turn into the protector role really well and you'll just have to worry about him with other people he doesn't know.

It could also be the way he was treated before he came to you. I think it takes awhile for animals to recover from that.

I'm going to have to go look up a Lowchen. I don't know what they look like.

Did you ever have problems with bringing him to the vet and being aggressive there?

Actually we've never had any problems with him. My best friend's aunt has a dog that she has to muzzle to take to the vet, or give him any kind of medication.
