  • If you're 40 or older, can you tell...

If you're 40 or older, can you tell a difference in yourself versus other people your own age? Do you seem to have more pep? Do you look younger? Do you have fewer health problems?

I was just curious to see if after following this WOE and/or exercising (or if you have been active most of your life) if there is any signifcant differences in other people the same age (now that we've hit 40+ when health issues come into play).

If you get a chance, please post something here. I feel that it would be interesting to read.

    Thanks!

I feel younger and am in better health than people much younger than me. I really think that exercise makes a big difference because the people I know who don't exercise have all kinds of health issues and look older than their actual age.

Thanks! I'm glad I'm back too!

A man in our office was just diagnosed this week with diabetes. It is real and it is out there so I have to get serious about my health and stop taking it for granted; especially since my brother and two sisters already have it.

By the way, how's your igloo holding up? What happens when you put the hot water on in your shower or use your blow dryer? (eek! Does all the ice melt?)

Diabetes runs in my family too.

You have to take cold showers and air dry your hair....and hope it doesn't break off.

I suck at telling age. People I think who are young are older than me and people I think are older are younger. I know I personally feel a lot better than when I was in my 30's.

I think I feel and look younger than friends my age that have children...the ones like me without kids seem to look and act younger, children age you!

MOG, funny you said that about children. I always acted crazy around my friends and then when they had children it seemed that they got serious (I guess they had to -- they were parents now). I have friends who are my age and they now have kids in college. It is so hard to believe since I never had children -- it is almost like their kids are our age now. I never felt "grown up" until later in life...so maybe it is all part of maturity...children give you your next step into being "grown up" whereas not having kiddies you continue on as you were -- there was no next step...(?)

goin2Bgood, I'm not good at telling ages either. I always think everyone is the same age as me and they are either younger or older...

I am more matchewer than my non-kid having friends (as you say, you have to start being more practical and stop getting drunk all the time - lol), but I think I look younger than them. Kids can age you, yes. They are responsible for many a gray hair. On the other hand, in many ways they can keep you young as well. I also have fewer ailments, either due to my woe or exercising or both. I have to watch out for that diabetes problem as well. My assistant is a year younger than me, doesn't have kids and is falling apart at the seams. She was told not to go to the gym as even that increases her blood pressure. Of course she's always got all kinds of (unmentionable) snacks at her desk, so that may be contributing. She's trying to fuel a 40-something body on a 20-something diet.

Re: If you're 40 or older, can you tell...

Lady, I noticed that too with a girl here at work. We're the same age (42) and she has kids in their teens & 20's. However, she always knows what's in style, what's going on, etc...better than me. I never know what's in, how you're supposed to wear this or that and I know it is because I'm not "out there" as much and that I don't have kids telling me not to wear this or that a certain way. This is also a pretty laid back office. You can wear casual everyday and never dress up (business attire), which is very cost effective and comfortable. Yet, it is hard to find out what is in, what is the style, what's going on in fashion, etc.

Children seem to keep you "up-to-date" on everything.

I've looked through "More" Magazine a few times and bought some copies since it is for the 40 & over age group. I was hoping it would fill me in.

Hey, they have a model search about once a year too...someone from Atkins who has reached their goal should go for it!!

I'm not 40, but can I answer anyway? If I were still in Dallas, I'd answer YES! People there stay indoors and are far less active...including me! In Colorado, everyone is incredibly fit--regardless of age!

Granted, I'm speaking in extremely general terms, but let me give an example: in my Texas town I was on the Parks and Recretaion Board for the town. Guess what-- nobody wanted walking trails because it was too hot. Well, wahhh. Being on P&R is a nightmare when you deal with some taxpayers who think exercise is breaking wind or opening a Skoal can.

I really think different climes and topographies bring out different groups of people. Texas is full of fatty fatsoes, and Colorado is filled with incredibly fitty fitsoes! Even my kids here have lost a lot of weight! Kids in Dallas sit on their duffers because it's too hot to play outside and are very overweight and less fit unless forced to play sports...and even then. Major lifestyle differences in these two places, and largely due to people not being able to overcome weather limitations.

Hopefully I won't anger anyone with my post, but it's what I've lived and noticed. It's anecdotal, so take it for what it is.

                            Hum...Cleo...good point.

People motivate people a lot of times...and weather either makes you feel drained or puts a spring in your step at times also.

I know when our air conditioner went out, I felt so hot and drained when I got home...ugh! (The weather was in the mid 90's...)

I think I have a lot less aches and pains then many people my age that I know. But then of course, I am an exercise fanatic! I think exercise is the ticket to youth. When my daughters and I go out together, people often can't believe that I am old enough to be their mother!

I have to disagree about the having kids makes you older thoughts. I think having kids as kept me younger-feeling. I had tons of fun when my kids were little, it was almost like reliving my childhood again -- I could build sand castles, and make snowmen, etc., without looking like a moron! Like somebody else said, I am also more up on what is in fashion, etc. because my daughters help me!

As far as looking younger, I think its all in the genes. Either you have good genes or you don't.
