It's not "cottage" country anymore - the real estate in Toronto and outlying areas has become so dense and unaffordable that many folks buy in cottage country and make the commute every day. Hard to believe...but true.

For my money....I'd be looking in B.C. The island are expensive, yes, but they're also populated too. Look more towards the interior - Williams Lake, or the Okanagan (Salmon Arm). It's incredibly beautiful there - we intend on building there when we're ready to retire. Mountains, lakes, rivers, orchards, nature, clean air. It's got it all!!!
There are ridiculously expensive areas (Muskoka) but it's not all like that? I own a beautiful cottage in haliburton, next too muskoka, and i'm hardly a millionaire (and i even own a house right in Toronto too) ?

I've never been to BC, but I do hear it's gorgeous. It's one of the places I'd love to visit in my lifetime..

                    Re: Canadian friends?

Hey Wanna - this is the Land of the Maple Leaf. Get it? You silly.

I'm here, I'm here! Our cottage is in Ontario on Georgian Bay, home of the longest freshwater beach (I can never remember if that's Canada only or in the whole wide world). This area is becoming a bit busy because lots of people are retiring here, although they stay to the other side of the river. We are on the north side, near the beach. There's lots here, berry picking in the summer, apple picking in the fall, fishing, swimming, boating on the river and the bay. Anywhere in Canada is probably a good choice. You should spend some weekends looking at possible areas. Look online, get some tourist brochures. We started coming here because the beach is so shallow it was a good place to come when the kids were small. It gets deeper though so you can swim properly. Now we have lots of friends so we can never leave. lol You might want to look at some "undiscovered" areas where the prices aren't too high. We also started with a tiny shack and we almost doubled our investment within 4 years so we moved to a place right on the river. Quebec is beautiful but there is definitely the language issue. Good luck.
