  • How Long Do YOU Keep Your Leftovers?

Okay, something that I never was really clear about and I never paid attention when I lived at home and my Mom was alive...How long do you keep your leftovers?

I've never been sure and have just gone by a three-day rule. I keep it for three days and then toss it.

    How 'bout you?

Depends on what it is. Most things I keep a little longer then that except meat.

We have 2 fridges, one that pretty much freezes a lot of things and one that is suitable for veggies. For most casseroles, as long as I am eating it everyday, I'll keep it as long as it lasts (like a week, for example). If I don't think I'm going to eat much more than a few servings, I tend to freeze the rest. I usually don't throw stuff out until it grows mold. lol

I saw a show once where they tested stuff and recommended the three days because there are so FEW fridges out there that keep things at the correct temperature long enough for them to last longer, even if they APPEAR to be okay. Now... something not being good doesn't necessarily mean it will make you sick. We've all eaten things that were questionable, I'm sure, or that just didn't smell "bad". It's just a chance you take after three days, I think.

I keep things until they start growing little green trees on them

            just joking !

I'm a freshness freak actually, one day is enough for me to leave in the fridge, then after that I will not eat it, maybe my hubby or kids will but I won't!

I clean out my refirigerator every Friday and find that most things will last a week. Meat is just fine for a week as long as it has been cooked - raw stuff should be cooked within 48 hours of thawing or purchase. I keep cooked fish 3 days max. Veggies I'll let be until I see mold or signs of getting old - sometimes they last 2 weeks but usually never longer than that.

I wait until they come out of the fridge, thank me for a nice visit, hand over flowers and a hostess gift, and leave of their own accord.

I think the go with the single socks from the dryer to a better place.

Re: How Long Do YOU Keep Your Leftovers?

Well, once I've cooked something, I won't re-heat it more than once.
I don't like leftovers very much, so I will make just enough for me to eat right then, or if I make something in the crockpot it is usually only enough to last that day and the next.

I cook for just myself so I try not to make too much 'cause I will get sick of it quickly.

But I always err on the safe side when it comes to leftovers and buy-by dates. I've gotten food poisoning too many times not to be careful.

Something that helps me is that I will often date items from when I bought them, otherwise things could sit in my fridge for weeks and I would have no idea how old they were.

***If you see mold or it doesn't look or smell okay, throw it away : )

Re: How Long Do YOU Keep Your Leftovers?

I try to plan my meals so I use leftovers in my meal plan. If I don't eat within two days I freeze it, if it sat in the fridge for more than two days I give it a sniff and a taste test, and decide whether to eat or to toss it.

Rule of thumb: if ind oubt, throw it out. While I don't want to waste food, I'm not keen on food poisoning either.

Re: How Long Do YOU Keep Your Leftovers?

Usually my leftovers are intentional. I make extra dinner so I can have it for lunch the next day. Other than that it's the 3 day rule.

If I don't eat left overs the next day, I'm not gonna eat them. But 3 days is safe.

Totally depends on what it is. I also make extra intentionally though so most of my leftovers get eaten the next day for my lunch! I keep things 3-5 days other than that, I don't have any problem with my refridgerator...I have more trouble with it freeznig things!
