Re: What do you all do for a living?

          In my life I have:
delivery person for a chicken place (hated it!)
janitor at an optometric office (hated it!)
retail clerk at a department store, in the sports and then the automotive section (loved it!)
hairdresser (it was ok...pretty stressfull and I miss the tips!)
nail tech (hated it from day one, but my employer sponsored me in the course so I felt obligated to do it despite the damage to my health)
Big life change happened to me in '98 and since then I have worked in retail.
          card store(loved it!)
high end store in the kitchen department(good money, good hours, really stressfull. The store unexpectedly was closed down..that was pretty harsh)
drug store (good hours, loved the work, good money, hated the owner!!)
department store in bed/bath and kitchen (good money but it was too far a commute)
card store...for my original manager but in a better location closer to my home.

I'm still at the card store, and probably will be there forever. The money is not great, but I've done the high stress thing, and I just don't want that. Bf has a high stress retail job and at least one of us needs to be sane so they can talk the other one off that ledge...lol

I've also picked up a weekend job working at an appraisers office. Love it! I work alone tidying things up and doing various filing jobs, so I can let the music blast as I'm working. I find it really de-stressing, and the money is awesome.

Re: What do you all do for a living?

Wow this is a neat thread, it's interesting to see who (not many) are actually doing what the planned or schooled for? I remember there was a time when you got a job at a big company and you stayed there forever. LOL boy times have changed!

I'm a Technical Specialst for a humungous IT firm, I specialize in Domino (Lotus Notes) email and web server support.

I've worked in marketing , corporate travel, and accounts payable, computer deskside support and deskside executive support (very stressful). I worked for the same company through all of those jobs from age 17, then we were 'sold' to the IT company 5 yrs ago. I was bitter at first, but am much happier now, i got to keep my seniority, and have much more opportunity in my field and pretty good job security (is there such a thing anymore? LOL).

            Do I like my job?

I could take it or leave it..but it' pays pretty well, and I get to work from home full time which is very very cool.

When I was a teen I actually planned on doing what Ztachick does, I wanted to be a probation/parole officer or a court officer. My parents both died before I graduated highschool and I was not able to get any gov't school loans as I had no cosigners. Oh well.

I now wish I'd persued a career in cooking, because I enjoy it so much I've actually considered going to night school, but can't really afford to start over.

Re: What do you all do for a living?

Wow! All such interesting things! I am not quite as interesting. I didn't go to college. I did go to trade school though for cosmetology. Once I finished that, I continued on to my cosmetology teaching degree. That was a lot of fun for me since I've always wanted to do it. Turns out the only time I ever did it was in school! I got married not long after and had two beautiful babies. Now I am a stay-at-home wife and mother and I love it!

I double majored in French Literature and Latin American Culture (basically French and Spanish)

Went to University in France for 2 years, hated it...hated Europe.
Ended up in Japan of all places on a lark.
Have been here 11 years now and am working as an English/Japanese Translator/Interpreter for Honda.

Re: What do you all do for a living?

Out of high school I went to business school and got certified as an executive sec. I worked at our local county owned hospital in Medical records, transcribing,(boring).
After i got married I went back to school and got my cosmetology license. I have worked in my little beauty shop for the past 32 years. This past year I have semi retired. I am just plain tired of this work. I do just a very few favorite customers now.

Re: What do you all do for a living?

I have made a few career changes over the years. I graduated from University with a degree in Accounting/Marketing, and was an accountant/auditor for about 15 years, then I switched into the Investment Banking area, as a Financial Planner for about 14 years, and in the last 2 years, I have been following other paths, doing cruise/travel consulting, and working for a marketing company. I leave all options open still!!!!

Re: What do you all do for a living?

Hub and I work with property...buying, selling, restoring, renting out (which is the main part). We have a farmhouse in Umbria, a shop and appartment in a Medieval town in Umbria, four holiday flatlets in the Aeolian Islands, off Sicily. Oh.. and just recently have inherited half a flat in London which is also rented out. Currently am restoring a tiny studio on Lake Trasimeno. It's fun...and nice to be ones own boss, though the market has changed for the worse lately what with the euro, terrorism and the fact that Italy is now an expensive place to visit.
