I am remodeling my kitchen and updating it with new appliances, cabinets and counters. If you were looking for a new home, how much would a new updated kitchen influence your decision to buy your new home?
Thank you for your response, !

Me too. I love the kitchen, its the most used room in the house. Sitting at the kitchen table with the kids doing their homework, chatting with your friends, family meals. A cozy, country kitchen is a must!

HUGELY!!!! I can't tell you how many houses DH and I have said "NEXT!" to recently because the kitchen looked like something out of the 70's or 80's.

The kitchen and the bathrooms are MAJOR decision makers for us. We're not for the country look though. We like an elegant, well laid out kitchen with quality appliances.

It would be number one for me, but I've seen very modern kitchens that I didn't like. It is a very personal thing. I like a walk-in pantry, and they are hard to come by, and the benches are always too low for me and give me a sore back because I have long legs. So even being ultra-modern may not mean it appeals to everyone.

Speaking about remodelling, HGTV is having their sweepstakes for a brand new house. I shouldn't be telling you all this cause then youll go over to www.hgtv.com and send in a sweepstakes entry and that will be just less of a chance for me, soooo if any of you guys go over to www.hgtv.com and enter and win, I get the dog house. LOL

Ditto - kitchen is everything. For me, it doesn't have to be the biggest kitchen w/islands and stuff but should have enough cabinet space to store things. Currently, I have a pantry and two sets of top and bottom cupboards and it's enough. Also, the cupboards are a light color - which I think is so important. Dark ones make the kitchen look small.

                      Re: !

When I sold my house my Real estate agent told me that the kitchens and bathrooms are the biggest selling points of a house, with the emphasis on the kitchen. Everyones opinion of what makes a great kitchen would vary, but I would say lots of cupboard and counter space and well planned (ie how far is the fridge from the stove etc).

I live in a 1920's house that still has the original cupboards and layout, and my sink and cupboards are in a small 'galley' room off of the main kitchen, which itself has no cupboards or countertops. as quaint as it is, it's the most annoying feature -- besides the fact that the cupboards, what few there are, aren't deep enough to hold dinner plates. I know all too well how a badly planned kitchen is a pain. When i have the $$ I can't wait to design a new one since ours has alot of space...but I won't do it until I have a substantial amount to do it properly .

                        Re: !

I agree, the kitchen is the most important room! The place I live now and the last 2 places had tiny little kitchens with almost no counter space! I hate it! There is no room for a kitchen table either! I would so love a big open kitchen with lots of counter space and a walk in pantry!

The cabinets I have now are so deep I have to get on my hands an knees and practically crawl in the cabinet to get to the back of the shelves! Believe it or not the drawers are that way too, they are so deep its ridiculous! everything slides to the back and you have to practically take the drawer totally out to find things, they're like 3 feet deep, its ridiculous! And my top cabinets are so high I have to stand on a step ladder to reach anything above the first shelf!

I would love to have a nice kitchen that is both practical and spacious!

The only feature I do like in my kitchen is the old deep cast iron sink, its a great sink, nice and deep so pots and pans fit easily and its so easy to clean!

Being a former realtor and also a "Flip This House" addict (tv show), it has always been stressed that the 2 rooms that add the most value to your selling price is the kitchen and the bathroom. So they say if you are going to remodel and want to add value to your home, remodel the kitchen or the bathroom. My kitchen now is so small. It is a little galley kitchen with only room for 1 person! We are going to start renovating it in the spring without putting on an addition. When I win the lottery, we will then put on the addition! Have fun remodeling!

You've gotten a lot of good advice. Updating the kitchen increases the value of your home. I heard on a real estate radio program once, that it's better to update the kitchen, than it is to finish the basement, as far as your property value goes. Just don't do anything weird like go with a "Coca-Cola" theme

I was fortunate enough to buy a house that whose previous owners were Jewish and had 2 kitchens: one for "meat" and the other for "milk". The upstairs kitchen is straight out of the late 1950s. The downstairs kitchen is alittle more spacious.

I think you should concentrate more on "kitchen flow" that is having the sink, oven/cooktop, frig/freezer and workspaces in a logical locations. For example, it makes no sense to have the sink area isolated from the workspaces because you'll need to be able to conveniently wash things. Likewise it isn't logical to have the oven isolated from any surface because when you take hot thing out of the oven, you'll want a worktop close by to put that hot pan on.
