  • How do YOU deal with the stresses of life and juggling everything?

    Dear All,

Just curious how you guys deal with work, family life, time for yourself, etc etc helping kids with homework, all in a short amount of time, plus sleep and exercise of course! ugh

doesn't seem like there is enough time in one's day!

Its all about picking your priorities and realizing you can't do IT ALL.

Exercise is definitely my OCTANE BOOST for everyday. I make sure that nothing competes with it. IT IS MY TIME.

Work is a given but I try very hard to leave it "there" at the end of the day. I'm lucky to live 5 minutes from work, so I have a very short commute which REALLY helps.

I am doubly blessed to have a very helpful husband and daughter so we share the household chores. I try to get laundry and other chores done during the week, so things don't get put off until the weekend.

Sleep? Oh yeah, I get 8 hours at least everyday....

Re: How do YOU deal with the stresses of life and juggling everything?

Oooohhh Betty, I am so jealous. 8 hours of sleep.

Being a day-time student with 8 a.m. with a husband who works a lot of second shift and therefore likes to stay up to 2 a.m. and watch movies after work (I know, I know, I choose to stay up, but I ADORE him and our quality time is scarce) means I often get 4-6 hours.

I don't have any kids but I live with my husband and another man (who is renting our second bedroom while I finish up college), and I do all the chores and all the cooking. I'm in class for over 20 hours a week so when I get home, I try to do chores while I study and do my homework... running the dishwasher while I review flashcards and crunch for whatever exam is coming up, reading chapters while I cook dinner, whatever. It feels like I multi-task a lot, but I know a lot of people would look at my life and think, "cushy."
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

        Vigilance, not perfection.

I generally try to focus on controlling those things that I can. My workout schedule, my eating, my sleep time, my wake time. If I control (with appologies to Mr. Covey's 7 Habits) those things within my circle of influence, everything else takes care of itself in terms of stress...I significantly reduce those things which cause me to stress.

I tried convincing my doctor that I needed prozac or something, he laughed and said I need to "slow down my day". Because we all know it's SOOOO easy to do so!! Riiiiight?

Re: How do YOU deal with the stresses of life and juggling everything?

In the past, I had gone thru some fairly stressful times. To the point where I was fretting myself into an ulcer. Not sleeping thru the night (dang 3:00 am) but those things are past. And they took their stress with them. I try not to get stressed about stuff much, because 'all things are fleeting', and will it really matter in a year (or a month) that I did it/didn't do it/it didn't meet my expectations? Not usually.

I don't have kids (just cats), so I don't have that stress.

My beading and jewelry making is a stress relief, I suppose, but when it comes time to sell it at shows, I get a tad stressy.

But I have found that shopping online is wonderful. Fill up your shopping cart with all the things you THINK you'd like, then delete it after you've gotten it out of your system. Alas, this dosen't work for beads. I didn't say it was foolproof. LOL

If that dosen't work, theres a bottle of vodka in my freezer.

I am stressing a little this morning because theres a big old plate of chocolate chip cookies in the break room. I'm pretending they're not there, and that this DEELICIOUS egg salad is so MUCH tastier than any old cookie.

nokids, nohubby but a stressful job here. I leave work at work. Once I get home, do some yoga or a real workout and take a shower..... Im done with the work day. I dont think about it and I sure as shootin dont discuss it. I can go about my evening how I want. I usually dont do a lot when I gethom eother then workout, get clean, make dinner and the next days lunch. I leave my evenings for me so I can relax. I watch tv or read a book or talk online with friends. I get about 7 hours of sleep per night during the week and always hit the bed at the same time. earlier if Im pooped.

Re: How do YOU deal with the stresses of life and juggling everything?

I multi-task, like folding clothes or ironing while I watch tv or doing a load of laundry while I exercise. That's probably why I like roasting or slow cooking meats---I can do something else while the food is cooking rather than stand over the stove doing only that.

I also try to set aside at least 15-30 minutes "quiet time" everyday for things like reading, doing my nails, etc.

But I follow a great piece of advice I got from someone I used to work with:
"Doing your work now and getting it out of the way, leaves you with more time to play."

That's why I do my weekend errands and chores the first thing in the morning: it frees up the rest of my day to do whatever I want.

                            Lots of interesting responses here!

Betty that's interesting tthat you say you need 8 hours of sleep. I've always been someone who needs at least 8 hours sleep. I keep hearing these "experts" (as they call themselves) that if you need mroe than 6 hours of sleep then something is wrong with you. But here you are, a very healthy person and you require 8 hous....its reassuring!
